Mr. Sandman 05-05-2004, 12:38 PM waytogo! What was their punishment?:btu:
quick decision 05-05-2004, 02:43 PM When the cop wasn't looking did you laugh and point at them?:laughs:
thefishingfreak 05-05-2004, 04:13 PM before the phone call was made. i actually went up to them and took 1 herring out of there net, to liveline. "thanks buddy" i said. "no problem man".
we called the cops twice. took em about a half hour to show up, but these knuckleheads were in no rush. they were havin a grand ole time.
punnishment was a citation. probably 100 bucks. and they lost there gear.
got 62 of them all brined up and ready for the freezer. and thats only half of what these schmucks had in one bucket..
"thanks again, buddy"
jugstah 05-05-2004, 07:59 PM just a hundred bucks? man they got away with it!
thefishingfreak 05-05-2004, 08:30 PM yeah a hundred bucks, if they can even read the ticket.
we kicked a couple more meatheads outta there with castnets tonight.
they should give us "volunteer herring run deputy" badges :D

Pete_G 05-05-2004, 10:28 PM I believe $100 is the maximum allowable fine in many cases, assuming this is a Massachusetts herring run. I know that's the biggest ticket I can write a herring poacher at my run. I'm just a Fish Warden though, not an EPO.
I do have very thorough confiscation powers. If it's fishing related, I can confiscate it.
Of course, the herring run is so weak this year I haven't seen anyone get near their limit.
FishermanTim 05-06-2004, 09:33 AM Can a fish warden deputize others?
Is there a way to legitimize a volunteer crew so that they would have the power to enforce anti-poaching laws?
I see enough poaching in freshwater ponds to make me wonder what else can be done by the legal fishermen without breaking any laws ourselves?

HEREIN lies the problem. A hundred bucks is laughable. Just like the boys who got nabbed in RI for selling bass for years out of season...the 10K fine was a "cost of doing business", no problem. 100 bucks? I pay more then that for bait. This "crime" is looked upon as a non-event. These guys need to feel some pain.
How about a MIN of $10,000. and a Max of $100,000. I think this is fair. The money goes for more law inforcement and improvement of the run itself. Poaching and stealing and trashing public (and private) fisheries has got to stop. Put some teeth into the law and let it bite a few dirtbags in the ass.

I can do better then that. As a fellow law abiding fisherman, I hearby grant you a carry permit and to shoot on sight any poachers...those approaching a run with cast nets...please fire one and only one warning shot, then shoot to kill if they approach. Keep their equipment for your personal needs.
Anyone without a permit: $10,000 fine
Anyone exceeding quota: $10,000 fine
Anyone tampering with run: $ 100,000. fine
gogetem!
KLMulder 05-06-2004, 11:09 AM DEM came to the run that I go to last night. When they got there I had just got my first one. They were checking everyone there so I came in to show them my lic and 1 fish. They did get one guy for being 4 over, $100 fine and has to go to court. I got my limit and came in, I set my tote down next to there truck and waited for them to finish, well we took a count and I had 25. OOOOOHHHHH S%$#
Put one back he said, I got out my ID and lic to get my fine and he said he did not think I was dumb enough to try to take a extra and wait for them while they were there. Have a nice night. The best part about it was when I got home one of my fish was a perch, LOL
FishermanTim 05-06-2004, 11:13 AM How about $100.00 per fish?
With a minimum fine of $500 - $1000. for first offense
Double the fines for each additional offense.
1st $100.00 / fish with $500 minimum
2nd $200.00 / fish with $1000 min
3rd $400.00 / fish with $2000 min
etc
AND CONFISCATE ALL THE GEAR, INCLUDING VEHICLE, SINCE IT WILL BE USED IN TRANSPORTING THE POACHED FISH.
So thats what was happening!...
I missed your call KL!
jugstah 05-06-2004, 11:36 AM If someone could invent "faux herring" then none of this herring poaching would go on in such large numbers.
It's out there in various forms...
I have heard that the Gag's Slammers are a killer immitation!
slapshot 05-06-2004, 11:46 AM In CT, the fine is $154 per fish. We also have a total closure - no taking of herring.
jsullivan 05-06-2004, 01:02 PM that run is the most abused run around.. I've called on people there too. I saw a guy send his son to walk up in the fish ladder when I started screaming at him he pretended not to speak english. mint run to liveline at though allways bait there .... almost bassman mabey u can have a pic of me there too.. well see?

funny you mention that...I just took a mold off of an actual herring...we will see what truns out.:)
fishdog13 05-06-2004, 06:43 PM i hoped you will share tose herring with everyone ,not too share and keeping evidence for you're own wellbeing is not right !! F2F
thefishingfreak 05-06-2004, 08:33 PM trust me:)
the evedence will surely be shared with anyone who goes fishing with me. especially my friends who can't seem to get the concept of livelining the live ones with circle hooks.
DO NOT SET THE FREAKIN HOOK, they won't listen so,,,,, they get the dead ones.
this is turning into a part time job.
almost had to make a citizens arrest the other night, some meathead with a castnet. but man could he throw it. looked like a greek tossin' a pizza down in somerville.
removing one scumbag at a time, deputy mike:rocketem:
fishdog13 05-07-2004, 03:07 PM glad too hear u say that . we all must respect the law. F2F
jugstah 05-07-2004, 03:19 PM Just be careful you don't get yourself into a bad situation where harm or foul could come of it to you or your pals.
killerlexus 05-07-2004, 03:51 PM alot of bait shop owners been out taking wayyy toooo many over their limit, and no one says anything to these guys.they would catch 25 then go back to their truck and empty it, and come back for another 25, this guy would run back and forth, while 1 guy would be in the water netting.some one should enforce where the bait shop gets their baits at.because they must have made $$$$$$ since they probably sell it out of their shop for $1 each, frozen..:af:
Swimmer 05-07-2004, 09:21 PM If there was a really ambitious EPO he could write a citation for each fish poached. One hundred herring equals $1000.00 fine. But the again the EPO would have to find a judge worth his salt to punish the perp that bad. Most judges in Massachusetts are the defense attorneys criminals dont have to hire. But way to go and take care.
Swimmer 05-07-2004, 09:23 PM One hundred herring at $100.00 each would be $10,000 fine yes. Sorry about the math I went to Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. Thats my excuse.:D
RickBomba 05-07-2004, 09:33 PM Not always herrin there, me and my buddy were down there last Mon day with no luck...
Lotsa Stripas jumipng all around us, couldn't hit one in the head with alure.

Rick
