The girth squared times length divided by 800 formula says that fish weighs 45.56 pounds. I trust Mike's scale but has anyone seen that much variance in the formula?

24.5 x 24.5 x 44.75 / 800 = 33.58 for example but it weighed 31.5

Man that is a nice fish! I don't think that formula is supposed to be on the nose, just give you a ball park. My 44" fish had a similar girth as slipknots, but it only weighed 29lbs10oz. By the way slipknot are you using a spinning reel or conventional when jigging at the canal? What are you using for line, and are you tying the bucktail directly? I would like to get together with you sometime for a lesson on jigging down there, if thats not a problem.

Specialist, some times I use a coastlock snap and sometimes I tie direct. I use spinning mostly and 65 lb whiplash to a barrel and 40 lb pink ande. Tape my finger good before , that line in combo with 5 oz jig will cut it bad on a hard cast. Ya we can get together sometime, I don't care. I'm certainly no expert at jigging, only been doing it at the canal since last Sept. J Powers has taught me alot and I read everything Saltheart and MikeP have to say.

Hey Slipknot, when you hooked your big fish last week were you using your spinning gear with the 65# whiplash? I read that taping your hand would save your fingers, thats a good idea. You use electrical tape on your index casting finger?
When you got your fish in did the jig wear a "hole" in the upper lip, or did ya hook him in that sweet bony spot? Just wondering if there was a good sized hole caused from the power of the whiplash.

JohnS, I was using spinning gear and I have had bass landed with a hole the size of a 5 oz jig worn thru but the 31.5 pounder was hooked deep in his mouth. I had to reach my large paw in there and pop it out. Others were lip hooked and didn't notice an extraordinary hole in them that day. So to answer your question , I think the braid in combo with the tight drag and fast current can open up quite a hole in the fish depending on where it's hooked. So always maitain pressure and don't let them get a bit of slack.

All of my big fish seem very fat this year! I think I'm seeing what they call peanut bunker in RI up in MA this year...On the other hand, I may be seeing things in general.

RickBomba - where do you live (roughly)?

There are 'nut bunker running around some of the southern areas of mass, mostly outside and south of the Cape. There will be some up in the Boston Harbor area too as there are some small schools of the bigguns (when not wiped out by the bait boats)... You'll see small 2-5 inch long shiny fish moving quick in a tightly packed large school of fish that turns on a dime, in these waters, that's probably peanut bunker...

John I have seen the stiny bunker at Wollaston Beach and Nut Island. So far their parents won't come in to the shore.
