fishing with eben last nite-every time I set the hook the drag would scream-not set light either-then it would be real jerky. Any idea why? How do you know when the washers are toasted? Does anybody oil the friction washers?

Change the washers!!!!

Dude, take a look at the drag washers, prob. cooked. I like them when they scream. Seriously, it's simple and cheap to replace the washers, or you can always use 100# braid and weld the spool to the shaft, then no more drag problems.:laughs: :laughs:

I got three of them and fish them all, but this is a new to me 704 greenie-first nite fishin it in the surf-getting wet-and had that happen on every hookset. Finally I just cranked on the drag and fished it. I got #50 power pro on so I was sure I'd be ok for the nite

Several things come to mind.
1. The sequence of washers in the clutch pack is incorrect.
2. The brakelining washers are fouled with oil/grease.
3. The outside metal washer (the one closest to the knob) is hanging up on the edge of the brass portion of the mainshaft.
4. HT-100 washers fade when wet.

1. The proper sequence of washers, going from the deepest in the spool out to the knob, is as follows:
octagon metal washer 58-704
teflon washer 56T-704
round metal washer 57-704 (small outside diameter)
asbestos washer 56B-704
octagon metal washer 58-704
asbestos washer 56B-704
round metal washer 57A-704 (large outside diameter)
NOTE: The outermost, closest to the knob, round metal washer has slightly larger OD. About 0.025 inches. It is kind of hard to see but it is definately there (different part number).
2. I find the drag works best when all washers are bone dry.
Wash any oil/grease with plenty of brake cleaner.
3. The outermost washer tends to hang up on the edge of the brass portion of the shaft. Sometimes you have to work the spool back and forth as you seat the spool onto the shaft. If this doesn't work, seat the knob lightly then rotate the spool. It will pop down into place.
4. It's a greenie so it should have asbestos washers. HT 100s are lousy when they get wet.
5. Make sure the teflon washer between the spool and the clicker ratchet wheel is in place.

As others mentioned, get yourself a new set of drag washers for the sppol. And don't forget the big white washer on the shaft. I once changed all my spool washers and still had a problem until I changed the one on the shaft.

Another thing you might have had going on---it's possible that the spool wasn't seated all the way on the base of the shaft. Sometimes the two slotted metal washers get mis-aligned with the flat side of the shaft and the spool doesn't seat right. You tighten the knob and think you have a lot of drag and in reality you don't have hardly any.

Sometimes the whole load of Power Pro will turn on the spool if you didn't wind on enough mono backing, but you wouldn't have heard the drag clicker sounding in that case.

i got a spool for a 750 that was so caked in salt you would think the it was submerged.. the outside of the spool was mint.. the center drag parts were frozen in place... took me a while to pick away at all the salt... then clean out the center cone.. it works well now but i really should get a replacement kit for the innards..

how do you remove caked salt (without the use of sharp tools) is there a spray like a brake cleaner or acetone that will melt the salt out..

Hardware store sells a liquid called CLR. Stands for Calcium, Lime, Rust. It will remove them all...

I've never had a problem with caked on salt, but you would think that if you just soaked it in distilled water it would just dissolve after a while. You may have to change the water if it is really bad, but salt has been known to dissolve in water.
