Was talking to Ron at the Sportsman's Den in Quincy the other night. I've been using him for supplies for 3-4 years now and he always has some good info when he has a chance to talk... Well, he had a chance to talk Sunday night while I was picking up some eels and he mentioned that some boaters have been getting some decent size bass with sea lice on them. Like when the fish first move in from their wintering in the south. Could this be a later run of fish or more evidence of lager fish way offshore???? Any thoughts?

Anyone else see this happening?

Hi bro, when bass are in deep water they almost alwayes have lice on them.It doesnt mean a fresh migration,it could just mean some fish moved to deeper water and returned and in the meantime picked up a few lice on the way.Whatever migration that was is certainly over by now.The summer residents are in and what is there is it.

At block island last week all the bass had lice on them because they were staying in the deeper water during the day which,at the island isnt to far from shore.

Thank you..The master off all things striped!! The one the only!! Fish guru!! Bill Nolan

I was thinking along the lines of Stripers from the Deep but hearing it from other people helps. I have not seen too many decent fish lately and none with sea lice....

Thanks Bill, er a Eelmaster - I cyber bow before you (just kidding) - What's up for this weekend?

Interesting. I caught a lice covered striper just under keeper length, maybe 28 inches, two weeks ago at Coast Guard Beach in Truro. Thought it was a bit late for sea lice myself, but the deep water theory make sense. It was after that really hot day on Fourth of July weekend, and I'm sure all the fish were in deeper water all day.

On another note.....

Not that I'm sure you guys care, but have you noticed that your "competition" seems to be having technical difficulties the past few days? I actually enjoy their board as well as yours, and not knowing what caused the trouble I have nothing against them or their board. But since I know you guys had some trouble with them at some point I thought you might enjoy hearing of their problems(demise?).

Blitzseeker,

After reading your post, I looked at a couple of the sites that I frequented before starting this board, and much to my suprise, they were both down. Stripersurf's message board is down and according to the link, its down for maintenance. WMI's entire site is timing out...

I wasn't aware of any trouble between this site and either of them though Although I couldn't use the name on WMI that I had used for 2 years... You are not mentioning another site not listed above are you??

How long has SS message board been down?

Thanks,

John

The site I never mention has been down since Sunday--ostensibly for routine maintainence. That seems a very long time. And, they really aren't competition for anyone. We have a nice core of guys here who all speak the same language and while we might rack 'em up and bust 'em, it's always in good natured fun. So, who needs that place? Given the owner's legendary attention to detail (NOT), maybe he doesn't even know the place is down. Or maybe he just pulled the plug. I could care less either way. It's a UBB board, as is Mike F's and Tim's, and they usually alert you when they're going down. They tell you it'll be down for like a half hour, and usually, what they have to do gets done well ahead off what they say. 3 days of routine maintenence on a UBB board would be unheard of, in my experience.

WMI was working fine last night--Gerry's software is kind of dated and he has always had periodic problems. You need a nice, catchy nickname there, John, so you can register it and get your name highlighted in red.

Hey Mike. Gerry is back up now. Not sure what the problem was earlier today but maybe it was just something on the net, connecting fine from home... For that other site, that is a very long time to be down for "routine maintenance"...

Hmmm, what to use for a name on Gerry's board??? Le Mackeral?? Fish Repellant??? Any suggestions??

Hi guys. I was referring to Striper Surf board....I had thought there was some story about you guys getting kicked off that board a while back and then starting this one, but maybe I don't have my story straight. Can't even remember where I got that story, now that I think of it.

At any rate, they've been down for several days....at least since Monday I beleive. I enjoy their board, but find myself surfing by here a bit more lately since it seems to be a bit more focused on New England(where I fish....never fished in NJ before), and there is none of the anotagonistic banter that clutters up that board at many times. Anyway, for what it's worth I think you're doing a great job here.

A Formal Welcome to you Blitzseeker,

Thanks for the good word on this site...

Personally, I did not spend alot of time at SS as they were more Jersey focused like you said. I wanted to create a forum with a more North East bend to it... Several of the regulars that come here were having problems on that other board when some of their answers were censored or removed. A conflict of interest between honest, truthfull answers and pushing product. They were eventually banned and moved on. I was not involved in much of that conflict but I felt insulted by the way other people, giving honest, unbiased information were getting trashed. Since then, several boards have openend by people that frequented SS and WMI in those days. This is just one of them.

I belive there is an excellent group of Fishermen and Fisherwomen that have come here and contributed their knowledge since this site started (wow, almost four months now!!!) and I am very happy with the direction this site is taking and what it can become (although I need more time to work on the rest of the site ).

...and a little fun banter is good for the soul

Blitz, I was one of the guys who was thrown off that board--the owner had just gone commercial and was plugging the stuff he sold as the greatest things since canned beer, and didn't appreciate it when some guys offered honest opinions on it and stuff he didn't sell. There's more to it, but this isn't the place and besides, it's ancient history. IMO the guy is reaping what he sowed now. The board that was set up by one of the other guys who got tossed with me is Tim Surgent's site, Stripersonline.com There are about 3 worthwhile sites in the northeast today, this one, that one and noreast.com I like the guys who run Flyfishingsaltwaters.com but the chat there is too "feathery" for my eel slinger taste For the record, John wasn't one of the guys who were banned from striper****.

Hey John, Saltheart is the nickname guy. He dreamt up both his and mine (ditchjigger). I used something else for WMI.

Hey Mike,
What's with this 'feathery' stuff. We got to get you into this long wand stuff. You'd be surprised what you can dredge up on a fly. The eelslingers and sandeel dunkers around me last night were!!

I'm not sure what, if anything, the presence or absence of sea lice means. I've caught stripers in 100' of water that had no sea lice but were a dark color. I've also caught bass on the flats that were covered with them. Their blond appearance was some indication that they had been in the shallows a while.

Follow up:

The front page of SS says that their board was hacked and would be up as early as today... BUT what happened to backing up the data???
