anyone troll dead herring out there? i am going out tomorrow and will be rigging some up for trolling and was wondering if any of you have any experience with this.

they gotta be fresh.
bend em' all sorts of ways to loosen them up.
split 'em up the tail on both sides,not too far, just the tail{looks like a split tail mullet}.
hook 'em in the head, should swim like a big rubba shad.
lead line,or tons o' weight to keep 'em down.

Never tried herring but slow troll live scup in shallow water... fairly low hook up %.. but you'll fine out if anyone is home.. then go back and toss a plug or whats left of the scup if BF's are around...

I think I've done them the same as TFF's method.???? I lay them on their side and starting from just infront of the tail section cut like you're going to fillet them. Stop the cut before the pectoral fin. Do the same to the other side. This allows them to "flutter" and give them more action.

I rig them with a hook in the nose and one in the rear connected with mono, stuff a spark plug down it's throat and run an egg weight on my line. Gets bait near bottom at slow troll and seldom miss a hook up with the double hooks.

Hook them through the nostrils, then set them up on a downrigger 1-2 mph slow troll - deadly :)

thanks for the advise everyone. i went out yesterday and had a great day. i landed 4 fish and only missed 1 hook up. i used a sliding egg weight above a barrel swivel, a single hook through the nose and bent them to loosen up the spine and they wiggled through the water real nice. all nice size stripers that ranged from 18 lbs to 36 lbs. great day on the water flat calm and sunny great way to start off the season.:D
