View Full Version : Making chum
Raider Ronnie 05-20-2004, 09:02 PM I got out of my freezer some blue back herring from last year and put it through a meat grinder, (filled a 6 gal bucket!)
I put the chum in some old 9er rig tubes, cap them and put them back in the freezer.
When I use them, while still frozen, I drill a ton of holes in the tube, and a hole through the top cap, going through the cap and tube and tie a line through the hole to tie it off or drop it to the bottom , makes a cheap chum bucket !
I'm wondering what or if anyone adds to their chum, as in fish oils, kolsher salt, ect.....
Thanks.
Ron
thefishingfreak 05-21-2004, 11:16 AM sand, glitter, and pogy oil
Fish On 05-21-2004, 11:24 AM I add sand and fish oil, hadn't thought of the glitter....nice!
Maybe I'll mix in some Mexican jumping beans too just for the vibrations.
spinncognito 05-21-2004, 12:51 PM when chumming to keep the mackerel around, I use cooked white rice and ground herring. The rice keeps the chum from just sinking to the bottom. Some guys use uncooked oatmeal for the same effect.
Last year I saw a guy who had a 2 liter Pepsi bottle full of chum and holes. He tied the rope to it and the other end of the rope to a rock and let it crash around in the surf. Antone heard of or seen this?
Spin
Raider Ronnie 05-21-2004, 05:06 PM Sand for added weight?
Ron
Fish On 05-21-2004, 05:57 PM Sand allows the chum to cover the water column by pulling some of it down instead of having it just float on the surface.

Raider Ronnie 05-21-2004, 08:46 PM Van,
Nothing added to it ?
Where's you're boat anyway? you find a better marina ?
Ron
Fly Rod 05-21-2004, 09:00 PM :) Don't add anything to my chum!!!
It dosen't stay on the surface!!!
Don't need glitter!!! waste of money!!!
A tote of herring for $16.00 makes eight 2 1/2 gallon buckets!!!
to add bread crumbs cost to much money!!!
If you have a bread maker in your area you can buy old bread for about $.10 a loft to add to your chum!!!;)
