I use pencils all season.
I build them from 3/4 oz to 3 1/2 oz.
The Schoolies love the small ones.
yellow, green, olive.

What Surfrod says......you should virtually be beginning your season with them.....schoolies as well as large fish slam them! I keep a full arsenal of 1 ounce Gibbs in all colors trimmed with a 5/0 siwash bucktail on the tail. I also use other sizes however I find the 1 ounce cast better than larger sizes and more easily worked in the water.....I simply find them less clumsy!

So.....yeah, you should be employing these immediately! Going out in a couple hours and I am gonna crush on 1 ounce pencil poppers!

Went out last Wednesday evening, i ran into about a half an acre of fish, mostly bass and a few blues ( up to 35 1/2" ) They were just sitting on top not doing much of anything in about 5' of water. I tried just about everything on the boat, the only thing that they would go for is a 4" pencil popper that i made over the winter. White bottom, silver top, white bucktail, and holographic eyes at the rear of the plug.I'll post a picture when i find the damn thing. It took me a while to get the action of the plug perfect but when i did i was getting a keeper on about every other cast and the 3 boats around me got skunked! I'll never go fishing again without a selection of pencil poppers.

yes. slow and if the water is deep. painfully slow with pauses, working the tip of your pole like you would a pencil to give the needle a bit of action

Oh that Slingah....couldn't wait to do a little braggin' huh!:D Pencil poppers rule....don't let anyone tell ya different. As far as retrieve.....it will always vary somewhat. Fast, slow, alot of twitching, a little popping....it is always how they like it. If how you are doing it is not working....change it a little!:btu:

I got nine today on pencils.....not big but they were fun!

Here's a great how-to on how to fish pencil poppers from the open beach:

In the Canal, let the current do most of the work for ya. Just give it a little up and down motion with your rod tip.
