Big ones...lots of them!!

Yeah, we were around that way friday and saturday. Both sides of sound LOADED with big squid. They were pulling in some MONSTER squid off the piers on the mainland shore.

They are big, we had a lot over 12" and a couple of real big "sea monsters" as my kids call them. These things have to squirt 2 quarts of ink...It is amazing... I saw one under the pier where I was fishing that was downright scary. This thing was huge but I could not get her on the jig close to 2' long. We called here "the queen squid"
At one point I saw so many swim by if I threw my cast net, I don't think I could lift it it would be so full. There was a thick wave of them...the jig never made it down to the bottom. My face was black when i got home, kids got hosed good. :D Lots of laughs! those things have good aim!

Guess what I had for dinner tonight?

I am going back tonight (if the weather holds...who the hell knows anymore) and look for the mother load. I don't need much more after last night but my bait dealer will trade me eels for local squid on a pound per pound basis. One good throw with my 18' cast net will put me in eels for the season:D I think I may bring the smaller 14' net because I am worried I can't pick it up when then move in.

I like the local stuff for my fluke bait, it is much nicer then the stuff in the box which is from the west coast, washed and cleaned then boxed. This stuff is big and sweet and you get a killer strip bait from them not some thin wimpy thing.

Would someone please clue me in on the squid as I never see nor hear tell of them up north of Boston. :confused: Sounds like good 'clean' fun. Would like to give it a shot sometime.

Well, I went back last night...it wasn't nearly as good but we got 1/2 my big bucket filled in about an hour.

I ran into another SB.com member while sqidding...Ragfly. He is down from Maine for 10 days with a bunch of buddies and is giving it hell. I will let him elaborate but he has been mowing plenty of big fish day and night and it sounds like they are having fun. I asked him when do you guys sleep?...He said, "There is plenty of time to sleep when I am dead" I think he said he has 5 more days down here before he has to return to work and gets to sleep in till 5 again. :)

Do you use regular squid jigs or something different? tried last night and everybody usin the basic one were catchin 1-2 every 10-20 minutes, another guy came, couldn't see what he was usin clearly but it was smaller thiner and lighter than a regular jig. he started pullin them out left and right....the lighting wasn't good by him either wth? anybody know what it might have been? or a good site to pick up jigs at? please help, pm or wateva thanx

I noticed that too that the dudes that were really slayin were using what seemed more like a Sabiki type off rig with rubber shrimp things instead of the feather teasers.
FishSmith might know a little beter. I think he actually tried to talk to them about it.

you can snag them with a trebkle hook. use yozuri squid jigs.

I have a plano box filled with an assortment of jigs. Believe it or not some nights they like the small jigs and some nights they like the larger "birds". Everyone seems to have their own "killer rig" but I am pretty basic. I am no expert here, I go just enoough to get bait and something to eat, I am not a squidhound.
For years all I used were the old teardrop ones but over the last couple years I found the birds more effective. A lot of guys make their own. I saw one guy who collected jigs them as a hobby, he had a whole tackle box full of squid jigs from all over the world...some really weird ones.

I just bring the full box down and find what they like that night and then switch the kids to that jig. You should be able to find these in any tackle store, there is nothing too exotic here.

You also may need some split shot or some small egg sliding sinkers to get this to the depth you want.
My favorite are the weighted birds that stay horizontal, but I use what ever works. Some glow in the dark. It is a mindless but fun activity that puts some nice bait and appitizers in the freezer.

IMO the one that works the best is the tiny bird, BUT the tines are so small you miss a lot. Big squid simply rip themselves off the jig somtime leaving part of their body attached. The larger ones have more solid tines and hold on.

I have been waitting for them. I have tryed Hyannis and Chatam and not found it worth going anymore?? I thought it was going to be a slow year!! Dam I bet I missed them again :smash: Maybe I will try tonight??
Has anyone heard of any and were here on the main land??

i am interested in learning more about squid jigging, anyone have tips on what type of water to fish (ie. shallow, deep, rocky, mud,) it looks like piers are a good place. also what kind of jigs and techniques.
i have never fished anywhere on the MA coast, so i have no idea where to try any sugestions. not asking for secret spots :smash: maybe some very well known places:confused:
