Figures, I'd pay 14 years of God only knows how much gas, only to find out the state has a rebate program for money spent to put gas in a boats tank vs your cars. I've started to save my slips, but I need the details.

1. How does it work and can anyone give me a number for the agency running it?

2. Or a mailing address I can write for the appropriate forms.

3. If the gas receipt is all I need, along with the right info to send in, how does the state differentiate between a receipt for car or boat; they don't look any different. Do I need to have the attendant, write boat on it? Seems too easy to falsify amounts, not that I would do that :).

the only one I know of /is the Federal credit// But you must c;laim the boat /// business in order to qualify/ then you get a credit for so much cents per gallon and you have to also claim this amount as income////

The form # in Massachusetts is Form GT-9M " Gasoline Tax Refund Application " .

The theory is that a road tax is included in the overall gasoline tax charged. In that boats don't use the road, the State rebates back that portion of the tax. I think it's 9cents per gallon.

RI may have a similar abatement program. Call your Dept of Rev.

I got a form for that with my dockage contract this year. I think J Powers is correct about why they do it even if it isn't entirely true. Yes boats don't use gas on the roads but to assume boats don't use the roads would be wrong. Since most are transported to the water over the road, they indded do use the road. Only very large vessels don't usually go over the road ever in their lifetime. But that's just getting too picky, you'll have to excuse me I'm a little wiped after 23 hours in the multi-purpose van with 2 small kids and a cranky wife.(didn't find any vacancys when we were looking for a room last night in Delaware)

I'm not sure how it is in Mass but I called the department of safety (road toll bureau) in NH and they sent me some forms to fill out.They say you have 2 years to send in form for rebate 0.18 per gallon consumed off public ways. I fuel up at Hampton state pier and they gave me a separate slip with gallons and price per gallon. I imagine Mass has the same bureau so give them a call.

Ya ever see a boat goin' down the road with the engine turning over burning gas ? I'd guess the vehicle hauling the boat is burning gas and thus paying the road tax. Sheesh - get some sleep.
