I headed out tonight to do a little fishing and the Surf was a little Wild tonight. I was just wondering do you guys have any certain Plugs that you throw when the Surf is a little rough. It just seemed that whatever I threw I just couldn't keep "In Touch" with it.

Any suggestions??

I have a big surf needle that Chumbucket made me that I have thrown in big surf without loosing touch with it! Actually most needle's from 2 oz up will stay with you in the rough stuff!
I also have a favorite older 7" bomber that seems to have more thump to it than most other bombers I have owned.
This bad boy weighs in at 4.8 oz and I have to brake out the Patriot 1209 when I know I am gonna use it!

The same thing i throw in calm seas. Jigs, Heavier ones though.;)

Loaded 7 inch redfin. 10 cc of water or mineral oil.

Also, those weighted rubber shads like Storm Wildeyes.

Tried the Storms and they got tossed about pretty bad. When fishing the Needles to do need to speed up the retrieve to "Ride" the waves or keep w/ the same steady retrieve?

Going back out tonight to try my luck again.

I was a day late and a dollar short last night. Met a guy coming off the beach as I was going on and he said the fishing was lights out up until 20 minutes before I got there then it shut off. He claims 25 fish keeper size. Weren't there when I got there. :(

I'll normally throw a big surface plug with a tall stick and try and keep the line above the crests or do completely the opposite and toss a tinny or a heavy rubber jobbee.

Makes me think of Fall fishing :eek:

3.5 oz habs needles in any color .

What Wee Wee said but make it 15cc of water and/or cod liver oil. Also, do not forget to seal the plug with a spray of envirotex lite after loading.

jigs, darters, bottle swimmers, needlefish and maybe a diving danny if I can get it deep under the surf

A Cotton Cordell Redfin is a plastic Scandinavian-style "minnow" swimmer like a Bomber or a Mambo Minnow. I like the blue/silver and the black/silver ones.

Take a hot needle and poke a hole in the head of the plug. Inject 10-15 cc of water, mineral or cod liver oil (you might need a bigger gauge needle to inject oil), then plug up the hole with a toothpick and seal with 2-part epoxy.

For some reason, and I can't explain it, the Redfin's hold the fluids better than Bombers or Mambo Minnows do. I think oil is better b/c it doesn't evaporate like water will, but oil is more viscous and you need a suitable delivery system (narrow-gauge needles in intramuscular hospital syringes won't work with oil but will easily with water).

That is a cool trick. I would never have thought of something like that....But I will give it a try.

I fished last week in rough water using Storms and they held well.

My solution: A hefty chunk of fresh herring with a 3oz weight.

I have been attempting to fish the big (10-12ft breakers) surf the last coupla nights (7-8PM). First night did well as the fish were right in the waves but last night all that was in the waves was zillions of pounds of mung/weeds. You guys know the kind I'm talking about, it adheres itself to every inch of your line and instantly surrounds and smothers whatever you have attached to the end of your line. Futile fishing under those conditions. :mad:

I do the same thing as FWW with the redfin swimmers, but instead of measuring how much water I put in, I fill them with water untill they sit nose up in the water. Easiest to do this in a full sink, once you burn a hole in it hold it underwater and tap it against the side of the sink-u can see air bubbles coming out-and fill it till it sits how u want. I always throw a dab of glue over the hole after I melt it shut.
