What do you guys us for long casting plug rods? I was looking at the alvey rods, weird looking rods and it looks like you would have horrible line pickup. They claim record distance casting though:rolleyes: I want to get a tough set up that will last for a long time. I was thinking a penn spinfisher with a ugly stick surf rod with the cork tape handles. What do you guys think?

I would take a look at what locals use and stick with that. Around here that would probably be conventional All Star or Arra rods. Though everybodies a bit different.

I've not seen one of the cork wraped ugly sticks, but if it's the regular blank I'd look at the Tica/Tsunami/Okuma first to stay in the same price range... I think they may have a better action for plugs.

I'm a little confused. :confused: Do you want to throw plugs with an Alvey reel? I would think, although I'm not sure (and not Australian) that an Alvey rig would be used more for tossing chunks. It might be fun to screw around with an Alvey later on but for now I'd forget that idea. For plugging, I would get a rod no longer than say 9' for the "inside" and 10' for the surf. You want a rod that won't easily fatigue you after repeated casts. As far as the spinfisher is concerned, that's a good choice. You may also find that an Ugly Stik, although a tough rod, is a little "whippy" at the tip. I would look for something with a little more backbone. Maybe a St. Croix or a Fenwick. I would put a 5500 size reel on a 9' and the 6500 on a 10'. IMHO.

Go with the star stellar light series. Great rods, I have the 9 foot conventional rated 1-3oz, the thing cast a 2 1/2oz polars a mile.

like spence said see what the locals are using for the type of fishing you will be doing. ask questions, most fishermen will be glad to help.

I have a Team Diawa rod 9', with cork handles, weights 1oz-5oz. Its a 2 piece, great for plugs. My real is a Shimano Stratic and I use Spider Wire Braid. I plug 90 percent of the time I fish and this setup works great for me. Go see Mike @ M & D's , that's where I got my setup.

Wow thanks for the post guys!! a freind of mine has a tica surf rod. Its a spining and has the rubber thin handle grip, like the cork tape but rubber. He said it was fairly cheap so i will look into that. I was just throwing idea's around with the alvey:D ST.Croix are awsome rods!!! I was just using one with a nice Calcutta reel:D Sweeet setup!!!!!!! Its alittle big for my needs though.

Well i gave in today and got a tica today. 8ft with a cd 50 Coranado. I like these reels alot. My freind has the stuff but on different rods. I love this set up!!!!!!!:D :D :happy:

Well, for throwing 3 to 4 oz stuff, I'd use a Lamiglas XRA132-2 (12 foot) or an Allstar Breakaway LDFC series (11 3/4 foot).

But you'll need something different for anything lighter.

I suggest you go to a tackle shop that specializes or at least has a good deal of clientele interested in northeast surf fishing - and get a feel for what the guy at the store recommends. Don't be shy about asking.

on the canal i use a tsunami 8ft MH and a okuma reel

Lami 121-3m Set up conventional with an Abu 7000C3. Just changed to 65lb Power Pro. Don't need much room behind me or much effort to cast 3 oz well over 100 yds.:D
