Ok,
Something in the trolling fluke thread made me think of this;
What if any fish would in your mind equal the level of acomplishment (or luck) of taking a 50lb striper for different species?

Some of my thoughts by species;

Blackfish; I have a PB at 14+, with some other 12's and 13's, and I'm not sure where I'd put that mark for these guys... Somewhere in the teens I guess...
personally anything over 15 will be mounted, and my ultimate goal would be 17.5 (My fathers PB from the 70's)

Fluke?? To me (I dont do a ton of Fluking) Anything over 10 would be a monster to me, but I think to equal the 50lb mark, I would say anything over 12...

Bluefish... probably 20lbs

Thats about all I fish for around here; other species? Cod, pollack, etc...?

Hope this is a good thread....
Bryan

I would say 18 lbs on the bluefish. Haven't caught much fluke but based on what I've heard I would go up to 14 lbs. Can't comment on the others.

20 lb blue....I am on the eternal quest and have been for 2 years now. I've got 18's before. I got a 18 2 years ago with a large chunk outta his belly....that would have been my 20 til the shark got it on the line.

I know where they live and dine all summer. I've seen dozens, know they exist...but don't ever let someone tell you bluefish are easy to catch...specially the big pigs.

The way the fishery is today probably 20# on the Blue. Back in the early 80's 20# ers were not uncommon. My personal best is 21# 6 oz.

weakfish over 12#'s? you don't hear of many of those, but i have a few. :D

20# blue? got one of those. :D

50# bass? didn't kill her, but i know she was all of 50#'s. :D

they all count, too, as every one is surf caught........ :p

Yeah yeah... boat fish count too...
I think 20 is a magical mark for Bluefish... at least now adays....
Weak fish; 12 is a good size, I think striperhound mentioned he just took a hoss weak...

Lots of people catch big blues and say oh that was a #15er when it was actually a #11-#12er. A #18-#20 blue is big, I mean big and fat and mean and I've done a lot of boat fishing and there are some big blues out there but #18-20 blues I don;t see too often. #50 bass. #20 blue. #12 fluke. #7 sea bass. #15 blackfish. #50 cod. And I don't think I could mount a scup.

my 20# blue was just over 20 on a verified dead-on accurate boga, as were the weakies. oddly, i have caught longer bluefish than that one but not heavier. it was one of the meanest, nastiest fish i have ever seen! i think it was like 39" or so. :eek:

yeah 15 is the magic number for blackfish.. stuck at 14.5 right now..
as far as the bluefish being mean and nasty.. amen.. I love deep jigging them on light tackle in august in 100ft+ they kick ass on light tackle...

now.. take the same tackle and go get a 50lb AJ... thats the meanest nastiest fish I've ever got....

tlapinski-was your 20#blue 39" or the one that was skinnier? last year i caught multiple FAT 34" bluefish, but never weighed any of them. just wondering where that might put me. 39" is a good deal bigger than 34" tho.

Bart, those 34" chompers are going to be from 12-14#. Usually closer to 12.

i was way off in my estimates then. i usually go by my cat, she weighs 14 lbs, but the blues i was getting last season seemed much heavier. i wasn't holding her by the tail tho...

Sorry sea gulls need to be at least 15# to be equivalent to a 50# bass.

For seagulls it depends if you catch them from the boat or beach...
