View Full Version : Cape Cod stripers?
funnyman 08-06-2001, 10:50 AM I'm heading to the cape on Friday the 10th and will be fishing the "narrows" below Nausett Beach and Coast Guard beach. It's called "Town Cove". Any reports of what the striper fishing is like and what baits are working would be greatly appreciated. Fish on!
funnyman 08-07-2001, 11:09 AM Time is running out.....:-) Need info if anyone has any. Thanks.
Roccus 08-07-2001, 11:23 AM Funnyman,
It's been on again-off again in that area lately depending on the "mung" situation. We're getting more SW winds lately & that usually helps clear the weed away from the beach. In general, there's been pretty decent fishing along the back beaches in recent days but I just haven't heard much about Town Cove specifically...you might want to give a shout to the folks at Goose Hummock 508 255 0455 (Bill Edwards) or try Harry koons at the Nauset Angler 508 255 4242 for up to date info on that particular spot. Good luck...
JohnR 08-07-2001, 12:26 PM Funnyman - welcome to s-b.com...
All I've heard is pretty much like what Roccus said - pertaining to the back beaches in general - that if you find water free of mung - there's probably fish. Pretty useless info but WTHeck....
Have you fished there before?
Good luck.
funnyman 08-07-2001, 12:34 PM Thank you for the info. I have fished there for 3 years in a row, but haven't been in 2 though. We've had some decent luck, a 20 lber. and a 12, which I know isn't that great to the regulars, but we were, and still are just learning. Tough to figure them out after a week a year! :-) Are black eels and crankbaits the best baits, and if so, what color cranks? We deal with Blackbeards tackle, any number for them? Thanks again. Mike
JohnS 08-07-2001, 02:11 PM Blackbeards # is 508-240-3369.
funnyman 08-07-2001, 02:21 PM Thanks, I will call them today. Mike
JohnR 08-07-2001, 03:10 PM Personally - I would use black eels or black eels :P - I wouldn't use a spinner bait only because I don't use them in saltwater. When I'm using a plug out there - any plug - I always have on a teaser, usually a red gill sand eel imitation...
funnyman 08-07-2001, 04:43 PM On a crankbait, how is the teaser rigged? Not to sound stupid, but I've never rigged a teaser.
JeffH 08-07-2001, 06:35 PM Like JohnR said you find a beach clear of mung and you can usually find fish but sometimes you find the mung and you find fish. You are probably going to find some mung along most of the beaches this time of year the key is to find the ones that don't have so much they become unfishable. When you step on to a beach and find mung right in front of you make sure you walk to the left and right to see if the mung clears. You can walk 50 feet and go from wall to wall mung to fishable. Your best bet this time of year is to fish eels, as John also mentioned, for two reasons first the fish like them and second you pickup far less mung on an eel during the retrieve. If you pickup a little mung after a retrieve or two just pick it off and keep fishing. Fish the points and bowls of the beach (they are very subtle) making 8-10 casts and move a dozen steps. Look for deep troughs between the sand bars and the beach (there is one right in front of you as you walk on to Ballston). The sand bars will show themselves when the waves begin to break over them as the tide drops. Try Ballston (Pamet Rd) or Head of the Meadow fish the top of tide down and always look for drag marks on the path out to the parking areas. The drag marks will tell you there has been fish there lately. Don't wade into the water but stand up at the end of the wash. Fish the eel all the way in, many times the fish are just behind where the wave breaks. Also, rough water is good water. If you need to use a plug try a Pearl Bomber or Gibbs white stubby needlefish at first light. Good Luck.
DRAG MARKS??!? hee, hee....
Funny man.....you should try those teasers.....I never imagined trying it until a certain someone introduced me this year and lemme tell ya....WHAT A BLAST!!!!! they definately deserve a "YEE-HAW'!!!!
I know what you are saying about the one week a year....I dont get out to the Cape as much as I would like (wait, that would mean me moving there) and it can be frustating to get into the swing of things during a few scattered weekends :(
Good luck!Let us know how ya make out...
JeffH 08-07-2001, 10:36 PM Ya drag marks, you know from the fishes tail as it is being carried off the beach. Obviously you have been fishing Provincetown far too much :). Jenn is right on the teasers fish them ahead of your plugs they can also be fished ahead of eels, a guy names Stetsko managed to catch a fair size striper this way.
uh-huh...yeah I got the drag marks idea.....now was that a joke about P-town and its um.....creatures?? or was that a dig about my fishing spot??? :D
funnyman 08-08-2001, 04:57 AM Let me clear something up here. I will be in a boat in the "Town Cove" area. I appreciate all the surf casting tips. I will be sure to post a pic of the "Lunker" when I get back. Thanks again. Mike
I'll be vacationing in Orleans at the Cape next week myself. I should be there wed-sund. I want to see if all this talk about the Cape fishing being better than RI's haha....
I plan on a night or two with eels at Nauset, and since I am dragging my boat up with me I'll be giving some deeper water a try also. Anyone have any good GPS waypoints for Bass out there????
