thefishingfreak 06-16-2004, 11:16 AM write down the # from the tag, the phone #, date, size, location.
and call it in.
they'll send you a hat, a plack, and the history of whear the fish was tagged.
pretty kool stuff.

fishsmith 06-16-2004, 11:21 AM link - I've caught one, I clipped the tag off and called the phone number on it, it said "Reward" - so my mind wandered to fame and fortune, but reality struck and it was a blue striper conservation hat, they did also send a history of the fish that was interesting. My buddy caught one earlier this year, and now they give you the option of a hat or pin (If I get another, I'll get the pin).
I suppose if you don't keep the fish or clip the tag, jot down the info on the tag and they can update the history of the fish.
Link you made the right choice to throw it back.:kewl:

Phestaris 06-16-2004, 03:57 PM I caught one the other night with a thin blue tag sticking out of its belly. I couldn't see very well in the low light conditions and wanted to get her back in the water fast. Maybe I'll get a hat next time! Nice fat 32" fish though.
thefishingfreak 06-16-2004, 04:40 PM best thing to do in that case is to cut the tag off and deal with it later.
saves the fish from trying to scramble for a pen,and paper.
I thought that the theory was to leave the tag in so that a given fish could be tracked over it's lifetime. Doesn't clipping the tag defeat the purpose? If you don't have a pen/pencil or can't read it leave the tag in and don't get the hat. The point is to study the fish population, not add to the hat collection. On the other hand if it's a 40+ well..... :D
thefishingfreak 06-16-2004, 04:55 PM no. they want you to "cut the tags #^&#^&#^&#^& and send them in.
although, if you have a pen handy, i'd leave it in.

spinncognito 06-17-2004, 04:58 AM I caught a yellow tagged one (schoolie 24") earlier this year. I clipped the tag. It came from the littoral society in the above link. You can print the info sheet off the website and send the tag back to them. I did that a few weeks ago and am waiting for my "jacket patch" and the fish history. Kinda neat.
Spin
p.s. The Wesite defined "Littoral" as: Found along the shore.
I guess that makes most of uss Litteraly Littoral
Bill L 06-17-2004, 05:25 AM Don't expect much from the patch, it looks like a cartoon goldfish. You'd think they'd use a striper or something
denis 06-17-2004, 09:35 AM Toonoc,I"ll second that those gold fish just don"t seem right.
Link jr,here a little list.
Yellow tag on top of fish--ALS
Yellow tag in belly---HRF
Pink tag in belly---USFWS
Orange tag in belly--USFWS
There are others but these are the most common in our area.

Mr. Sandman 06-17-2004, 09:47 AM amazing...I have never caught a tagged fish ever:(
RIJIMMY 06-17-2004, 10:14 AM My Dad tagged for the Littoral Society for years, hundreds of fish. I think he has only received about 4 or 5 back. The last one was from last year , more than 10 years after he tagged the fish. The person that sent the tag back did not report the size of the fish so you could not tell how much it had grown.
It is pretty interesting.
There are also Federal tagged fish, when you return those, you get a hat back
