View Full Version : Ok Load Rite Guys ??
macojoe 06-16-2004, 02:09 PM I have a new 2004 4200 trailer.
The greasing of the hubs is done by removing the rubber cover on the dust cover, grease fitting then replace the rubber peice.
This sucks! IMO. ?? I want to put Berin Buddys on, do you think. or would you remove the fitting on the end of the axle, or just but the buddys on over the fitting?
Thanks
Roger 06-16-2004, 03:57 PM I'm not sure what you see as a problem. If they are like mine, any time you put in grease it operates like a bearing repacker, forcing the old grease out. Bearing buddies just hold the grease against the outer bearing.
After my boat and trailer was delivered from Florida to RI, I pumped in grease until it came out fresh. At first it was pretty dead and loose, but after a bunch of squirts it came out clean. The old grease comes out from around the edges. Clean up is easy with paper towels.
If that's the type you have there should be no need to remove and repack your bearings at the end of the season.
thefishingfreak 06-16-2004, 04:22 PM if you have the little weep hole in the back of the hub?
bearing buddys are just gonna squeeze the grease out in no time. basicly making them fancy covers. because the spring wont have any more grease to squeeze in.
macojoe 06-16-2004, 05:40 PM So when do you guys put the grease in?? At boat ramp before the ride home?
And any one need 2 (tandam) set of (brand new ) Stainless Bearing Buddy's, with BRA covers :smash:
Vectorfisher 06-16-2004, 06:36 PM Maco better call your dealer and ask him, or Load Rite direct. I was giving mine a shot of grease before I went out each time and within 5 trips had a bearing seal give, selling dealer stated it was due to overgreasing, also said you almost never need to grease them. Had also said when the grease heats up it expands and there supposedely is no where for the pressure to go and you end up with a leaking seal. Not sure how much of this I buy but who knows?? I am also having other issues with my trailer and it seems as though Load Rite may be taking a step in the direction of getting me a knew trailer, we'll see! Will let ya know.
Got Stripers 06-16-2004, 09:48 PM I usually add grease while I peak behind the wheel and keep pumping until I see the old grease start to be forced out the back. Then you know you have them packed well and if you do this every couple of trips out and check one a year, then you won't have trouble.
macojoe 06-16-2004, 10:20 PM Well I have been using Bearing Buddys for 11 years now and have never had to replace a baring yet!!
So I thought it was a good Idea to get new ones for this trailer??
Then I started this thread, Now I have no idea what to do.
I like the way Roger explained it and it makes sence!!
I have always had grease all over the back of the wheels and stuff!! So I know that the seals were leaking eaither from failure or by over greasing. I belive over greasing!!
But has always worked and never no problem.
Just seems to be more of a pain trying to get the rubber covers off and then having to wipe up the grease and reinsert the rubber covers.
Bearing buddys are just squrit and go.
MJ, My LR has the same rubber covers. My trailer is a 95' and I only greased 2-3 times a season. Once a season now that I am in a slip.
I think they keep the water out and grease in much better.
I've used bearing buddies for 2 seasons of heavy usage and have no complaints.
A few pumps before the trip until the weep hole starts to ooze.
I read that the real problem is when you dunk your trailer after driving, the heat that has buit up in the bearing causes them to suck in moisture. Therefore, you want the maximum amount of grease in there.
Good luck,
Roop
macojoe 06-18-2004, 11:41 AM Like I said i have used Bearing buddys for 11 years and have never changed a bearing yet!!
But I think I am going to give this new system a try and see how it goes?
I have to say I like the way they grease from with in and push the old grease out! I am going to try for this season and see how it goes.
In the mean time what am I going to do with 4 brand new Stainless Bearing Buddys with Bras v:confused:
missing link 06-18-2004, 04:57 PM don't over grease ,it can blow the seal out, I only grease mine once every 2 months, and just until I see the grease moving back out that way I know it's made the complete circut. I think there is a past thread on this? very informative,,, later LINK SR:cool:
porcupine 06-18-2004, 08:36 PM I have a loadrite trailer with the rubber covers you describe, the grease fitting is in the axle thru to the rear of the hub, when you pump in new grease it forces the old grease out the front instead of blowing past the grease seal in the back of the hub. This is very close to a complete repacking of the bearings, a great improvement over the buddy bearings!
macojoe 06-19-2004, 08:41 AM Mine does the same as your porcupine, except that the fitting is under that rubber cap, not on the rear of the hub.
So I have to remove the rubber cap to grease it.
Thats why I started this hole thing. Cause this is a pain at the ramp. But If i am only doing it 1 time a week I will be fine.
Thanks all
