We pulled up to a SPOT yesterday and had a 1000 cows surfing on top when I stopped the boat...looked down in 12' of water and saw nothing but momma bassalos on the bottom.....oh for a heavy jig tied on at that exact moment....water was flat calm with no indication there was fish there....then next second BANG

That was the SECOND time this year I've seen this behaviour....BIG bass on top surfing and porpoising with their mouths wide open....ya'd have thought they were whales feeding the way they looked....way cool! Even better when we had triple hookups :D

no not that I saw, look like maybe krill or something really small like that. Did't see baitballs at all, but 2 weeks ago that spot was loaded so go figure....

We had bluefish pukin up what looked like baby pogies yesterday south of Pasque also, didn't get a good enough look at them to id, but about 2" tall and 5-6" long.... might have been immature herring too?

from your description i believe the bass were calling the mothership to return.... and if you regularly witness nature phenomenon like that... you should have a good digital camera onboard to capture the moment.
