Well I spent most of last week on vacation in Harwich on the Cape. While there I wanted to get some fishing in with my Dad who was up from the Outer Banks of NC, he loves the Cape area and wanted to try Nauset Beach with some eels, we gave it a shot on Wed night with no luck, not one hit in 4+ hours, didn't see anything working in the water either. At this point I was saying to myself we would have been better off back home in Charlestown, haha.
The following day we decided to give the boat a try, talked to a couple locals and they all answered the same. Fish the rip at Monomoy from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. So we gave it a try. Monomoy was approx 8-miles from shore and it was slow going as the winds were kicking up about 15-20mph. We arrived about 4:30pm and it was obvious where the rip was, several boat around the edges and several large boats within it. Fish were tearing up the surface for bait. We anchored about 25 yards outside and let the tide drift our eels into the rip, picked up a few blues but mostly retrieved just the heads. The boats trolling seemed to be sweeping jigs and hooking up occasionally. I decided to put a green umbrella on with wire about 30' down. As soon as we began trolling we began pulling up 2-3 bass at a time, some were larger in the 30-34" range. On one pass with my dad at the rod, he hooked into what he said was a tree trunk, after 10mins we got it along side and it had to be a 30-35lb+ bass. Unfortunately he tried to lift it into the boat by the leader while I was getting a gaff, and the hook tore through the bass's mouth.
All in all I think we landed 4-5 keeper bass, one a monster, and probably 10-15 bluefish in the 3-5lb range. My Dad had a blast as he has never seen action like that in NC.
The Jury is out on the Cape but I would peg Monomoy right up there with the S.W. Ledge of Block Island.........
