I have a 1205 Lami Ron Arra that I not only use for eels but for needlefish plugs and a Lami 108-3 for the rest of my plugging duties. Got Penn reels on both right now, a 460 Slammer on the 108-3 and a 560 liveliner on the Arra but gonna get a 560 Slammer for the plugging duties soon.:D

Also fish 15 pound berkeley big game mono on both!;)

Sorry....50 pound Seagar floro leader.;)

lami 1201M's. either a VS300 for a spinner or an abu 7000c3 for conventional. 65# stealth on the spinner and 30# yo-zuri hybrid on the conventional.

Sounds like a 1088 Batson and that combo would be perfect for you. That's what I started out plugging with, just be sure to use either Fireline if you want a non stretching line like braid or mono as that rell has a small line roller and you could have trouble with some of the more limp braids out there.

or try a 10'ft sealine-X, i have a reel and i used that rod with it. it works great. or you can use other guys' suggestion.

my setup is:
1) 10 ft lami L/M/H rod with penn 704Z bailless loaded with 30 lbs fireline rated for 2.5 oz-5 oz, but beffy enough for eels, tins, big plugs, jigs, and baits.

2)9 ft st croix light tackle rod for plugging and jigging with my dawia black gold loaded with 12 lbs silver thread line

3: 11'9 ft alstar batson customized by saltheart with an abu garcia BG CT 7500 w/o levelwind loaded with solar collector 25 lbs test and big game supreme green mono 40 lbs test for light chunking, tossing tins and spoons, and heavy pluggage.

i use 40-50 lbs fluro leader.

For the bucks you cant beat a 1088 Batson, with a 704... great combo, under 300 clams....
For a real cheap set up, look at Tica or the venerable uglystick....

Wow, are any of those names translatable into english :) Sounds like we have some independantly wealthy people here. I did see the name penn mentioned once. I love casting my conventional when I can get the sholders to cooperate.

Hi Eben, can't beat that stick for the money. As to what I use...well that depends on where I am fishing

I just got the 1205 with an Abu 7000 HSN for eels and plugs, love it. May do a 1201L chopped off 6 inches done spinner when I have some more money.

Armand, I still have a rod for the donation pile. One of these days I'll get it to ya

If Lamiglas makes it, I probably have it :D :smash:

But the one I use most often for all-around plugging is the XRA 1204.

For pluging most of the time I use either a batson 1088 with a nautil 6500, an Arra 1204 with a mag elite, or a batson 1088 with a mag elite.

For eels I use a lami 1201L with a 706z.

Depends on where and when I am fishing.
One rod that I do like in particular is an Allstar 1085-2 with a Daiwa ss2600 and 20lb fireline. Fast action rod works poppers great.
Rod is good with 3/4 oz up to 3 oz no problem. Since it is a 2-piece rod it breaks down for easy for transport in the trunk of my car.

what would be a good newbe conventional rod, reel for launching lures in the canal

I am waiting until I start building my own rod before I do a really good conventional canal setup.

But from my research, here, with other websites and mostly from a member I fished with once (fishaddict).

I would go with the best 10 ft heavy action rod you can afford and match with a Abu Garcia Big Game 7000 HS - you can get the HSN if you like the feel of the narrow spool. that seems to be strictly a matter of preference.

As a beginner convetional caster and a beginner ditch fisherman - that is what I plan to build, buy next.l

I've got a 704z I love that little reel. I've got it on a 6/5' med action spinning rod. I use that from boat. Caught some big fish on it.
