View Full Version : Anyone Think We Got A Snowballs Chance In Hell Of Landing The Big Unit?

I believe we have a better chance than the Yankees and the Angels......Johnson would "not" want to come here and pitch alongside the "other two" of the three best pitchers in the American League and possibly get the Red Sox over the hump and possibly help win them their first World Series Championship in 86 years.....he would be a hero, an unforgotten warrior in Boston who came here and put the Red Sox in the promised land! I think he would prefer a crack at that as opposed to "simply" win another championship with the Yankees? When I say simply I mean, its been done.....many times, and he will simply be added to the long list of players in NY who won a championship! Win one here and you will truely be remembered as one of the greatest sports heros in the history of the city of Boston if not in all of baseball! You would be remembered in baseball lore along with Schilling and Martinez the way they remember Spahn and Sain and the like!!!! Am I not correct?

BF,

According to my local paper, Johnson and Schilling DO NOT get along at all. Odds are slim to none he'll end up with the Sox.

ya sure, and the papers always print the truth:rolleyes:

If the Angels get him we better hope to win our division because the wildcard will be a tough one then.

I thought the big unit was happy in Arizona

Slip,

The paper here says he's happy in AZ but will accept a trade if it helps the team in the long since they've been good to him.

On the Angels front:

"One source said the Angels flatly have decided not to go for Johnson; another suggested the Angels likely won't do anything on a "large scale." And what's larger than the 6-10 megastar Johnson? It appears the Angels are disinclined to trade their top prospects for a $16.5-million rental."

John E....all the more reason why I see the Sox makin' a deal for him.....they want to ship Nomahhhh out asap and this would be the way to go for both teams....I think it is gonna happen!;)

I haven't..But we need another pitcher..And if thats what it takes..Oh well..Plus he is gonna be gone the end of the year anyway...

Maybe it would be a good thing if the Sox got him. I can see him and Schilling beating the you-know-what out of each other in the clubhouse already. Did you read in the paper where he changed his number so Schilling couldn't call him?

well ok then :D

thats honesty. I can see how many are sick of him. The A-rod thing has left a pretty sour taste I am sure. But he is a GREAT ballplayer :)

"Great" BW? I don't believe that he is in that "Great" category. Can you give me reasons why he is great?

hmm i would rather see the sox make a play for zito (i heard a piece by gammons from espn that he may be a surprise move) perhaps the a's wana get the sour taste of losin tejada? zito is much younger and could benefit for years to come

zito over the BIG UNIT ? i don't know about that, heard zito's another head case. plus he's up and down this season. maybe gammons just wants to jam with him.

Surfcastinglife

well the unit is 40 zito is 26 unit and schilling supposedly dont get along and zito can be an outstanding pitcher taht curve is nasty. hes got a good 10 years on him the unit one or 2 unit has a contract 4 times as large moving nomar for zito could free up space to resign pedro and/or varitek and zito would be the BEST 3/4 starter in the game behind pedro and schilling and perhaps even lowe and complemented with the way wake's been pitching in a 7 game series i dont see many teams standing in the sox way

zito over BIG UNIT??? team supposedly built for title run now and for that how could you not want the UNIT?

Surfcastinglife
07-14-2004, 04:33 PM
fact is we're 6 games out of first the team built for a championship now isnt working. the unit is an excellent addition yea but what happens if they dont win? will they look back next year (assuming of course that zito is even out there) and wonder if they had gotten zito would they be in a better position next year if they had gone for zito. and zito is no slouch he can hold his own especially if u pair him with the likes of jon lieber ;P i look at the pitching roster and i think depth u look at it and think 3 aces. but whos to say zito isnt an ace?hes capable of carrying that load

afterhours
07-14-2004, 05:01 PM
this years stats say zito isn't an ace. 4-7 4.62era 17hrs 46walks

Surfcastinglife
07-14-2004, 05:04 PM
hes not getting much run support either and he IS capable of posting better numbers perhaps a change in sceneray will do him good i just look at the unit retiring after this year and if zito is out there then they should get him

UNIT is signed for next season as well, and word is he's looking for 2 yr extension.

It sounds like it maybe a possibilty for Sox to get the BIG UNIT..Very promissing at least...

and the sox should give it to him without much hesitation. Whatever it takes to win a world series I say.

signed or not HES 40!! how long do u realistically think he can still go? look back into history with pitchers after they turn 40. they're effectiveness decreases exponentially its a proven fact

BigFish

Under most circumstances that is true Surfcastinglife (you need a shorter name) but Nolan Ryan pitched until 45 and he was no slouch between 40-45!;) I would give Johnson the extension and hey, if the guy tires, you couldn't talk him into going into the pen?

You will soon see....he will be wearing Red Sox before too long!:uhuh:

zito over BIG UNIT??? he's still got some gas in the tank. ones going to the hall of fame and ones going to the hall of corn flakes! someday zito MAY get it together or not.
