View Full Version : leadcore, tube&worm. best outfit? stripercrazy 07-15-2004, 04:05 PM I'm going to get a outfit for trolling a tube and worm. what do you guys use, shimino, penn, what should I be looking for? what pound test do you use. what's the best rood and reel steup? thanks ed. Van 07-15-2004, 07:08 PM You will get many replies to this, so for me i use a PENN 330 gti level wind, a 7' med ugly stick, and 36 lb lead core. Good Luck jim24 07-15-2004, 08:50 PM i have a custom rod from ron at charlestown B&T, but you don't have to do that....I highly recommend the Penn 113hsp if you're trolling wire line. The reel has a chrome plated brass spool which holds up to the pressure of the wire and also prevents "crushing", which you can find in other reels. Ron has plenty of offerings...but I would personally stay with the 113hsp...the rod is up to you...be sure to get the carbon guides......wire will cut through a "benny"s rod like a hot knife through butter. The ugly sticks or penn rods will work, but I'm not sure if they will last through some hard fishing I use 50 yards of poly backing and 10 feet of 60# mono leader...that's followed by 100 yards of inconel wire, marked at 100 feet.. Knots are VERY important. Haven't lost one yet.......just my opinion.....good luck! If you haven't noticed....I love wire lining. By the way...I only troll tube and worm on wire line. remember.....only my opinion thefishingfreak 07-15-2004, 10:36 PM penn 320 or 330 gti levelwinds. cheap, short, glass boat rod. 4 colors out, ball bearing swivel, big a$$ tube with a big a$$ seaworm on the hook. troll in 4-15 feet. rod in hand, held low. the bass cometh! mike fishsmith 07-16-2004, 07:52 AM swivels swivels swivels did I mention swivels. This is a lure that spins line. As slow as you can troll and like freak said a big @ss worm on the end. The latest craze with the T&W seems to be the 4 - 5" of small diameter fluorescent orange by the hook, has anyone had success with this? Is this a substitute for the worm? I've never got a fish on these without the worm. quick decision 07-16-2004, 08:58 AM You guys use levelwind's for leadcore? I was told that was a no no. Van 07-16-2004, 09:03 AM Originally posted by quick decision You guys use levelwind's for leadcore? I was told that was a no no. Absolutely, avoids problems with people who don't know to feed the line on the reel. With lead core no need for special eyes or line guides. fishaholic18 07-16-2004, 09:34 AM I use Penn Jigmasters for leadcore,no levelwind. Find them on ebay cheap. ProfessorM 07-16-2004, 05:54 PM Penn Jigmasters for leadcore are perfect. 113's are too heavy. They are simple and can handle any striper. Buy them on e-bay. Get the ones with the chrome spools if you can, they are the older ones. P.M. porcupine 07-16-2004, 07:59 PM I use 45# lead line, penn 113 reels, and penn 7' powersticks. This was the heaviest lead line available at the time, next time I will try 60#. I have found that the life of this line is fairly short, I cut off two colors after one season and replace the line after two. The type and length of leader you use at the end of your lead line is much more important than the lead line. good luck stripercrazy 07-19-2004, 02:16 AM thanks everyone, I 'm watching e-bay.ed:happy: Mr. Sandman 07-19-2004, 09:08 AM Just walk into your local shop that deals with some charter capt's...ask the same question and say give me what the charter guys use. schoolie monster 07-20-2004, 12:50 PM I'm probably gonna give it a try next season, maybe get the outfit for christmas or b-day... What's a typical leader setup for leadcore. I've heard 10'-40+'... what's the consensus? King Cod 07-23-2004, 07:49 PM Hey, I'm pretty much going along with what everyone else is saying; a 320 GTI or Jigmaster with dacron backing and 4 or 5 colors of 45lb or 60lb leadcore matched with a medium action boat rod with heavy duty guides (Silicon Carbide are best) to withstand the abuse of the leadcore is best. AS for leaders, 6-8 feet of 50lb or 60lb fluorocarbon is best; if you use too long of a leader, the general rule of 1 color for every 5 feet of water depth with be useless, since mono floats and will make the tube rise in the water column. Regarding tubes, the best tubes are without a doubt the Santini Tubes, made by pete santini over at Fishing FINatics in everett. These tubes simply outfish any other tube I have ever fished, even the heat of summer. I have caught many fish over 40 inches on these, and got my biggest ever, a 44 inch, 34lb specimen, on a purple one two days ago. A huge seaworm will definitely outfish a smaller one. Peter is the absolute authority on tube-and-worming; stop by his shop, and he'll hook you up. Hope this helps. spence 07-23-2004, 08:23 PM I'm no expert but I've always fished with Penn Senator reels and lead/dacron line, non-levelwind for sure... -spence striprman 07-24-2004, 06:28 AM On my brothers boat, he uses a Penn Senator 3/0 with 45 pound test leadcore line, works super. 179 07-26-2004, 07:33 AM Penn 320 o 330 GTI are great reels for leadcore. I spooled up a 320 GTI which I use for depths up to 18-20' after that I switch to wire. Vectorfisher 07-28-2004, 09:01 AM I find that the wire is a pain with tube and worm, the tube is not heavy and offers little resistance in the water just seems to be a pain trying to let it out. I have been fishing Cape Cod Bay last 2 trip out and have been dropping 5-7 colors in 80' of water and the other day I caught a dog so I know I was down near or on the bottom. I have also been using 2 5 gallon buckets to get a really sloooooow troooollll;) stripercrazy 07-30-2004, 02:55 AM I got a rebuilt penn 330 gti, comming in the mail 65.00 plus 8.50 shipping and ins. from alaska off e-bay. and I'm getting a custom rod build. thanks everyone for the help. ed:happy: vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
