Lots of great articles. The Surfcaster conversation was especially good. Good to see the pics of the different plugs too. Someone should post the Ditch Ettiquette article at the ditch! :laughs:

Yes, it is a particularly good issue.
Some people diss the mag – but it’s kind of hard to argue with what they’ve been able to do: they have a major subscription base, a good website, a freaking TV show, a significant presence at the outdoor shows and a newstand presence at the major bookstores.
But what I like about them is that they allow their contributors to occasionally step outside the conventions of formulaic how-to and where-to. :yak:

even though they burn a spot now and then I still get and read the magazine as soon as it hits my mailbox. My really enjoy reading the interviews that Joe does with the rhody surfcasters.

when mine comes in the mail I lock myself in the bathroom for 2-3 hours

some of the reports are valuable, but the techniques and cooking recipes are something i like to look at...

i'm just amazed at the end of the article that bm didn't end up w/ everyone lures in his bag, pants, shirt, etc.

I know it's an extremely tough balancing act for outdoor editors and publishers to try and satisfy and entertain an infinitely wide variety of reader's without also losing face with the core base.

And I always think a little outdoor humor thrown into the mix of how to's and where to's helps to keep things fresh, fun and in perspective.

Ya know I just gotta say.... that even though I'm from Brooklyn, OTW is without a doubt... my favorite magazine! I've spoken to some of the folks from the magazine before because for some reason when my issue finally reaches Brooklyn it's pretty good and torn up. They've always done their best to mail it special for me in a protective folder but it only lasts a few issues and then it comes the regular way again. Anyway I just wanted to say thanks for a great mag and a great service dept. If there is anyway to permanently seal up my issue I'd love to hear about it. As for the rest of you guys... don't start thinkin yer gonna git the same treatment cause after all..... I'm from Brooklyn!! ;)

Anybody know the guy that got swept off Beavertail in 96?

I knew Gary Bradbury who got swep off the Tail last year and drowned. He was a dive Master and an experienced surfcaster. Korkers, belted off, the whole bit. You just never know. I fish Black Point all the time and you just gotta "pay attention" if you are going in harms way.

It almost always happens when we are under the effects of a tropical storm. When I did the research I found that was the case in most of the incidents.
Early stages of big water along the Naragansett shore and Beavertail, etc, are very good fish-wise. You can often see the fish tailing and rolling in the white water - it makes people take chances.

Joe ,I agree about it happening with the tropical storm effects on the water . Since I have worked at the bait and tackle shop , I have sold stuff to 2 people that didn't come back (different years) . In both cases there were big ocean swells ,but it was sunny out and I think that if people don't see overcast and a ''storm'' they are not as careful as they should be.:(

Occasionally an experienced surfcaster will get washed out but overall it is very rare.
Very few people have accidents when it is raining too - mainly because the person who is most likely to have an accident does not own a raincoat - so they stay in.
Accidents are most likely to happen after a protracted period of fair weather easterly wind and around the time of an approaching/departing tropical front.

Allt rue. But sometimes even the best of us get hit by a rogue wave that you say "Where the hell did that come from." I surmise that's what happened to Gary. he didn't take chances and had fished the surf for 20 years or more. Sometimes you just don't know. I have been busting fish in the suds since I was 16 and I'll be 57 this Fall. I still fall down at Point Jude. Some places are nasty to fish...even with Korkers.

My story-
last year I almost died out on hazard ave... it was after one of the hurricanes came though offshore..(i forget the name) ANyway, It was ight before dusk, the bass had the bait pinned right up to the rocks, and I decided I should go cast from Indain Rock... It would have been perfect, I watched the waves for about 10 minutes before i chose to go out there, thinking that if I stood in the usual place I like to stand I'd be o.k.... Well, about 20 minuts later, this wave about twice the size of the others came in and took out my legs, I bounced down the rocks over the bubbleweed, the water from the wave was over my head as I was sliding down. Something clicked in my head and I instinctivly thrust the butt of my rod downward and it caught in a crack in the rocks, which kept me from going into the water.. As soon as I stopped sliding, I scrambled up, just as the next wave came in. Agian I used the butt to hold the rocks, and when that wave started its sweep out, I finally got to safety..

I still fish there, just little more cautiously
