whats up.i want to try live lining eels tonight.can someone tell me the best way to to rig up an eel and the best technique to use.

keep them on ice and crack back about 3/4 down. and stick hook up under chin and thru eye. sounds pretty grusome eh? use BIG ones!

and choose your eye depending on the angle of the drift. Left or Right. Get my drift ? Use a swivel and sometimes a weight depending on conditions. from a boat a 2 oz egg is nice. Some prefer rubber core. That is great when there is a little current and not a ton bu the all time best and a lively sum bitch . He will swim right to the bottom pretty quick.

What Beachwalker said - refer to Eeling 101 in the Archives - and bring a 3M green scrubbie pad for eel wrangling - they're the best.

keep on ice yes... with some rockweed to keep them out of the slime.... crack the back.... bad idea.... no need for doing that....hook thru bottom of chin up through one eye or nostril... careful not to go through the brain ;)

Yeah, I dunno - if it hadn't been for dumb questions and the occasional old timers takin' pity on us (occasionally at our expense) - none of us woulda learned very much - it's the mentoring thing, I guess -

was taught to fish eels by old timer who caught more 50's than anybody i 've ever known. he broke backs near tail to keep them from balling up, out of rocks, and to appear wounded or disoriented. been doing it for years and have had no complaints from bass( just a few of you guys )

I always crack their back by smacking them on a rock or something. If I don't, I end up with a useless eel ball thats impossible to unravel. As far as it being cruel, what do you think sticking a hook in its eye is? LOL

I've been known to give the eel a good slap before I bait up. I know that if I've got a fresh and kicking eel on I tend to rush the first couple of casts because I don't want an eelknot--a little wack and the eel slows down a hair on that first lob out of the bucket. This is especially true if I'm fishing a shallow rock pile. Deeper water I tend not to wack them.

dont wack your eel on rocks thats got to hurt .

Whack it or not, fish it just like a rubber worm for largemouth

If your fitchin from the beach, try draggin em in the sand right after you hook them, it slows them down enough to get that first cast off. After a few casts they won't ball up on you. At the other end of the spectrum, if you think your eel isn't lively enough, try tickeling them in the eyeballs. That usually gets them squiggling again.
