Broke off 2 in a row this past weekend. Hoping it was my knot and NOT my 50 Pound Power Pro.
What would you use on #50 Power Pro tied to a crosslock snap or breakaway clip? Basically I want to tie it correctly one time and fish 3 ounce plugs...

Haven't tried power pro yet, but i like the palomar with barids.

Palomar to hardware, or overhand on the leader,uni knot of braid around it to tye on a shocker.

i use uniknots with 7 instead of 5 turns with pp 50# and have had no failures.

Palomar has not failed me yet with any braid

I have no complaints with a Uni Knot on 30# PowerPro.

uni knot with braid and mono

triline knot or a palmoar knot. but triline knot is good for powerpro.

Haven't had any knot failures---what I HAVE had were out and out line failures.

But that was a few seasons ago and the latest Power Pro has a different look and feel to it.

Call me crazy but for the application that you described I use an improved clinch knot and have never had a problem with either Power Pro or fireline (the only two braids I use)

Mike, How can I tell the new Power Pro from the old stuff?
I'm starting to get that "queazy" bad line feeling.

also experienced more than a few unexplained breakoffs with pp a couple of years ago( 2 different spools ). problem now gone with newer pp. not sure but i think the older pp had a softer feel to it. maybe they had a bad run or changed composition.

You may not be having knot breaks...you may have a burr or sharp edge on the terminal tackle you tie to. This happened to me. I had a SPRO Heavy Duty swivel and it had a small ding or dent in the area where you tie and it would cut the PP every time. check your swivel.

There are a few new knots out there that work better for braid. There was on in the fisherman just a few weeks back that is pritty nice (don't know the name...sorry.)

The polamar is OK but I don't think it is the best for braid personally. And you can't use it on all connections.

The improved clinch with 10 turns works but it is a little bulky when chinched down some times

The 8-10 wrap uni-knot seems to work quite will. I really like uni's. They draw-down better and make a cleaner knot better then any knot I have ever seen.

I have suffered a few "mystery break-offs" with PP in the past. So far this year everything is holding. (except for that swivel problem)

I was watching a knot demo a couple months back with PP and when he pulled the 50# PP with his hands it broke....not at the knot but on the running line!

One thing about PP is that it is not as abrasion resistant as good mono. If you pull it between your two hands and scrup it against a rock under tension, it will break much sooner then any mono. Lots of comm guys will not use it for that reason.

You should not tie direct with braid maybe that is why you are having problems. Braid has no strecth so it is a good idea to use a leader.

The stuff I had problems with was light grey. The PP I've bought in the last couple of years is tannish green. On the grey stuff, if you ran it between your fingers in places, the coating would "puff" up.

This year's stock seems to be dark green.

yes, now i remember, the grey bpowerpro snaps off quick. the green one isnt bad.

the pp i was having a bad time with was green when new and it quickly faded to a grayish green, and was soft and puffy.

Gee, I had this stuff put on last fall ; about $35 worth of line. I'm not too sure of the color or the "puffiness" factors.

Patrick, I've had terrible luck with the clinch knot with braid (15-30lb)... do you do the standard 6 wraps?

I will try the uni with more wraps too, cause I use the palomar and it works great, but its a pain to tie sometimes, for example, with a premade teaser rig or sabiki rig. A uni or clinch is easier out on the boat.

Surely Bassey, another thing you might need to do is back off on your drag a bit. As someone said, there's no stretch, so that's alot of pressure on the line.

I use alot of braid on light tackle and heavy and rarely have breakoffs. And I fish heavy structure. I fish with a drag light enough to just pull on a strong hookset. That works well for me.

I havent heard much talk about the Stren super braid. i spooled up with it a few weeiks ago and i really like the stuff, did have one mystery break off right at my feet. I use a palomar to the swivel then top it off with mono.

I have been tying the uni knot also but I double the line first, then make the knot. This has been working great for me.

I use a uni to uni knot with at least 7 turns but always an odd # of turns over 5 to a mono leader . then its a palomer to the snap or a improved clinch or uni with 7 or more turns to a plug .

I use 14 , 20 and 30# fireline ( spinning ) and 35 , 50# spectron ( conventionals ) .

I never tie direct to the business end of my line . I always use a 3 ft mono or florcarbon leader
