View Full Version : Spooled !!!!!
So thats what its like to hook a big fish. Story goes like this.
Me and a buddy from my marina head out in my boat around 7 for some BLOO fishin'. Were trolling wire line with deep divers catching a couple here and there.
All of a sudden I see fish breaking behind the boat, Geeezz I yell those are big, can't be bluefish ..Then my rod nearly folds in half.
I pull it our of the holder and I only have about 100' of wire left, with 200 or so out. I yell to Joe NEUTRAL !!!! By the time he gets it out of gear the fish realizes its hooked,,,now I know I have a tuna. I have never seen line peel off a reel so fast in my life.
The rod is bent half over and there is nothing I can do to stop this fish. I tried to tighten the drag, NO WAY,, but now I see the backing and I know there isnt much on the spool cause, this is just a blueing setup.
OH NO I'm into the backing,,,,,,,,,,SNAP !!!!!!!!!!!!!bye Bye.
Absolute thrill of a lifetime (a first for me). and it lasted only 20-30 seconds.
I was shaking for another 1/2 hour. We saw them surface a few more times and he still had wire, i was now trollong power pro.
but we both knew that was a freak shot of luck -right place at right time- and would not happen again that easy.
Finished the day with a few more blues. Went home happy. I can't even go back cause I'm off to fish Lk. Ontario Thursday-Sunday with my buddies, hope this luck continues.
BigFish 08-04-2004, 03:36 PM Old saying goes..."It is better to have hooked up and lost than never to have hooked up at all"!:D Great story Van, sounds like you had a blast!;)
Moose Nuckle 08-04-2004, 03:37 PM Sounds like fun for 30 seconds. Was it area 51?

ThrowingTimber 08-04-2004, 05:26 PM :crying: I'm dying for a shot at a tuna
Sounds like you had a blast! :D
BasicPatrick 08-04-2004, 05:34 PM Welcome Van
:D
Raider Ronnie 08-04-2004, 05:58 PM I know a little about this;)
I tried to be a smart ass and updoad a picture of the one I LANDED !!!!
But I posted it once before and the site won't let me upload it again !!!
Van,
On the down side, a decent hit of a bass or blue won't be as thrilling anymore!

BEETLE 08-04-2004, 07:08 PM Try false albacore or bonito with light spinning gear on for size as well. Same results on a smaller scale.:btu:
Surely Bassey 08-04-2004, 09:19 PM Can you estimate the size of the tuna? Maybe a range?
Van was lucky....he got 20 seconds of screaming drag..
Roseneath 08-04-2004, 10:09 PM Im jealous. Were you far from shore? To bad you were unable to get the drag set for the fish... it could have been hours of enjoyment.
You'll get another tuna.
:)
likwid 08-04-2004, 10:12 PM Down deep like that?
Could have been a stray GBF hanging out with schoolies blasting blues into oblivion.
Be very careful with reels if you lock into something like that, if it isn't heavy enough, the fish will spread the spool and lock the reel up.
Fish On 08-04-2004, 11:00 PM Nice story Van, too bad it wasn't a beefier setup by chance. where abouts were you...no specifics....just in general.
Good luck at Lk Ontario!
Notaro 08-04-2004, 11:04 PM Dang, Van. I need to wet my line on the haba soon. How about friday? night or day, doesnt matter, i can use my pop's car. PM me.
Glad you all enjoyed my report. Told my buddies last night over a few beers, must had 10 shoulda or wouldas, but it happened so fast there is no way I "coulda" been ready, plus I'm just bloofishing...Anyway..
Ronnie: Talk about spoiled now !!!!!Race Bass and Boston Tuna..
Bassie; I never saw that fish, but the other ones around looked like maybe 40-60 lbers. The guy i was with said bigger, but I don't think so. Real hard to tell.
Rose/Fishon: I could still make out buildings on shore, and was heading for deeper waters straight out from Boston Haba..
Notaro: I leaving for NY (Lk Ontario fishing) today, sorry buddy..
Won;t be fishing this area again till mid month..
Likwid: After that happend we got no more blues in that area., they must have been chasing them.. What do you mean "spread the spool"?....
Notaro 08-05-2004, 09:07 AM Van, no worries. When you get back, lemme know.
Flaptail 08-05-2004, 09:13 AM Had the same thing happen a few years back over in Cape Cod Bay off of Dennis by the #1 buoy. Had on an orange Hootchie with a red pork rind on the tail hook. Caught a couple blues then a couple big sportfisherman pull up around us and over go the spreader rigs with the plastic squids. So we are all trolling the same area and it was quite overcast but very calm and warm when all of a sudden one of my rods goes over and before I can get it out of the holder I am into the backing ( 80 lb. dacron) and the old penn is screaming. I look out to see a Bluefin about 300 lbs. with my orange hootchie hanging out of it's mouth breach the surface and crash back in. In seconds it was gone. Line, wire, everything. The spindle of the Penn's spool was bent in a vee when the line had run out and the knot was reached connecting the backing to the spool. The reel was junk and un-fixable.
Dam you Van, I'm hopefully heading out Tuna fishing this weekend, now you have me thinking that my rod/reel combos are not up to the task, :(
schoolie monster 08-06-2004, 11:08 AM Van, that's awesome. I've heard this happens from time to time, but haven't seen 'em yet. I may have to throw together the heaviest outfit I can come up with... just in case.
I'm sure you were wired. I get wired for a while after losing a nice bass.
Thanks for the report. PM comin'
Way to go VAN!...
That's great! :claps:
Surely Bassey 08-06-2004, 10:04 PM I bet that the fish that hit Van was a larger, non-school fish because if it was a school of 50 pound footballs then both rods you were trolling would have gone down.
nightfighter 08-07-2004, 06:58 AM my spooling was like Flaptail's. A very exciting yet expensive 20 seconds!

When you hit the drag and line starts digging it exerts enough force to PUSH the sides of the SPOOL outward
also melt drags
blow up gears
in general destroy reels :)
Hooper 08-07-2004, 11:29 AM Going east of Chatham on Monday..... thanks for getting the blood flowing!!!!!
