What size boat and electronics, etc are needed to go from newport to block? My friend can use his brother in laws 27ft center console when ever he wants? We were talking about trying to get someone who is experienced with this trip to possibly come along and school us on it.

In decent weather that boat should be able to make the trip with no problem. Just keep an eye on the weather.

I've done it several times in my 20' CC. I wouldn't do it without a gps and compass, and safety gear of course. Let me know if you need help.

Use common sense and a 18' is probably capable of making the trip given good weather conditions.

I've been to the Island on a 17'er. Weather and a chart plotter or some kind of GPS.

I do the trip about 7 times a season. All you need is a compass, nav charts, tide charts and the abilty to use it all and you can do it. I would advise going there if all you can use is a GPS. YUou need to be able to get home if it fails. A radio and some flares, life jackets etc.. I can make the trip to SW Ledge in 1:10 if the weahter is good. Crusing at 29 knots. You can see the island as soon as you pass Pjude Light house.

He has no gps. Also no compass i dont think. Probally would be no good if the fog rolled in. WHat kind of charts, capt seagull?? WHat does a gps go for? His brother in law is loaded maybe we could talk him into getiing one. Also i dont know how to plot on a chart??

Its all about the weather. You can make it from matunuck to block on a sail board if the weather is right....

I'd be willing, but not without a compass and gps.

You can buy a good compass for $30.00, and a good handheld GPS for $150.00. Whether or not you venture to BI they would be extremely useful.

Actually boat has a compass, and my pops has a handheld gps i could borrow, do i need a special marine chart for the handheld gps?

yes, the GPS will tell you what direction to go, but not whats in front of you...like the Point Judith Light or Jamestown. I have a marine GPS with All charts overlaid. As well as Radar. But more importantly I have fished this area all my life and get get to BI and back like going to the store for milk. However if you want to make the trip make you can navagate without the electronics...dead reckoning.:)
