Any dates set up for the Rhody fling?

Where would we be fishing exactly? What conditions can we expect? Prevalent baits? Preferred way to fish? Eels? Lures? How far do ya have to cast?

Just getting my game plan set.

Patrick, Early evening you may want to cast plugs to passing schools. After dark eels, needlefish, swimmers depending on where you are. As far as casting to passing schools sometimes they are in close other times you'll need a boat.... Otherwise you don't need to cast too far. You could be anywhere from a sandy beach to cobble to slippery bare slate ledge.

We call then tourneys here or gatherings. Flings is a Jersey term that they use on SOL. Its a fine term but people may get confused about just who's "Fling" it is if everyone uses the same name. When I organized the first of these things a few years ago with the WMI bunch I called them extravaganzas (tongue in cheek) . Remember the "May New Moon Extravaganza"? Anyway , extravaganza didn't catch on well. :) I wonder why? :confused:

Well I'm excited but I'm also NERVOUS... leave it to patrick to give me a list of things to think about...lol....Now patrick will tell you I'm not wimpy when it comes to weather, bugs, rats, dirt, etc... but impaling eels on a hook.... gotta say I'll have to leave that to him lol...

Okay...good....but how do you deal with lobsters or blue claw crabs (man, I'm getting hungry!)

I don't eat or cook lobster...maybe once or twice a year...just a personal thing...;)

That's OK - I'll show Patrick to put an eel on a hook ;) (just couldn't resist :D ) While eels truly are the choice from shore, plugas and chunked bait do score their fair share of fish...

I'll use them if they'll help me catch a bigger fish...lol...I'm just not putting anything on the hook myself unless it's dead ;)

This thread is wierd, there is no mention of the date for the Rhody leg yet and there's like 9 or 10 replies.

So is it Oct. 12-14 or what? Can I fish just on Friday night? Would anyone be able to fish Friday night with me? I can't make it on the Sat. night, if I blow off the thing I have to attend, my fishing gear would likely end up in some dumpster somewhere :(
I'm already pushing it with the night of the Mass leg.

Bruce I'm pretty flexible, you bring that new scale of yours and I'll bring a tape. By the way I got my whiplash last night, but the heaviest sb's I could find were only 1oz. I got some white 2oz that have a head like a pancake. I think I am going to the Canal on Sunday night instead and maybe more next week as I am off all next week.

Yes - the 14th & 15th of October with the 14th being a "Scouting Night" that still accounts towards the whole shebang... And yes, anyone that wants to fish Friday night as well or instead are welcome to do so!!!

Ummm, if my calendar is right, the 14th & 15th are a Sunday and Monday John. You do mean Fri and Sat in the middle of October for the Rhody leg correct.

Ok so its the 12th to 14th of October. Friday night to Sunday morning. In RI waters. Should be good. You can fish with me and Smokey Friday night if you like Slipknot.

Sounds good to me. The only problem I have is I only have one bigwater set up. I have nothing for Mindi to use. I guess we can share my set up.

If Patrick is coming, I've got to hit this fling, if for no other reason than to see if he shows up. Between all the Patrick and now Mindi posts on this "FISHING BOARD", I think it's high time he put his money where his mouth has been for sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long. Does that give you a clue how old some of that stuff is getting. I'd like to fish with this young teenage expert, on everything from Tuna Fishing in the Canal, to breaking down and repairing any 2 stroke you can put in front of him. Maybe I'll bring some reels down for him to take a look at, should be a snap for a "Jack-of-all-trades" like him.

I'm also curious about this little state called Rhode Island and the fact John tells me it's got lots of structure I'd like. If that's so, forget the eels....I don't need no friggen eels...can you say plastic? I'm hoping to join you guys for this one, is this a waders/korkers thing or will just waders/felt boots get me by? I hate to invest of something for a few night a year, if needed does anyone have a spare pair I could borrow for the night? I'm a size 9-1/2 shoe, probably a 10 on the boots.

Sure bring some reels down. You better bring a screwdriver set and some newspaper to lay it out on the ground. Make sure you can get the parts. I realize you are being facetious and you're just trying to poke some fun at me but honestly, I'll give it a whirl. Spinning reels only. Conventionals are a blur to me.

GS brings up a good point. Are Korkers necessary? I have felt lined waders that work well on sand but no korkers as of yet.

Mindi, korkers are hard plastic sandals that strap to your feet with titanium carbided studs in the bottom that help you grip slippery terrain. Not trying to make you feel stupid, just defining them so you don't have to ask.

Slip nice website , you do nice work. Wait till I buy my house, you will be hired. I got your number and will give you a call as soon as I know for sure. If you want to hook up on sunday night shoot me an email, otherwise maybe later in the week.

Korkers are prefferable but not neccessary for all spots. The nice thing about Rhody is that you run from pure structure to structure mixed with beach. Especially down South County (SW end of Rhody)

Places which really require Korkers are Naps, Watch Hill, the Breachways, and some of the rock piles dotting the shoreline. Places like Hazard Ave and Newton Ave aren't necessarily safe even WITH Korkers but we'll be avoiding that area...

Felts soles are not as good as Korkers I'm told. I have not used them myself but that is the opinion that others that have used both...

Specialist, Thanks. I don't think Sunday night is good for me, another night though.

Felt soles grip sand, pebbles, and gravel just fine but once you start getting into rocks the size of say, footballs, it's hard to grip them. You're better off jamming your feet inbetween rocks then stepping on them directly.

How do korkers do on dry rocks? I heard they are magnets on the wet stuff but very slippery on the dry stuff. Can anyone comment?

I have no significant problem with them on any rocks, wet or dry. One thing to keep in mind, wearing Korkers does not give you care free mobility on any/every surface. They DO increase your traction and significantly increase your safety but you still need to be carefull...

I see the date for the RI leg is pretty much set..Oct 12-14, but where is it going to be??? beavertail?? also have the same question for the Mass leg..Where???

I'd love it to be at Beavertail! Maybe I can talk Saltheart and Smokey into fishing there Friday night to scout for fish.

Things are looking about 85% good for me that weekend!

Not sure the actual days (most likely Fri-Sun...Mon??!?maybe?? heehee) Any way it IS a Anniversary weekend for the hubby and I......if we just "leisurely" (sp?) fish are we still welcome to join in the fun????

All that advice you gave on tackle and only one big water gera, hmmm. Not to worry, I'll lend you my 1208 with VS 200 spooled with 65 #whiplash. Oh and I almost forget, I'll be bringing the eels, too ;) if you want to show Mindi plugging I will have plugs for you,too. If you want to try your hand on flyfishing, I can set you up to. We're going to meet and burn cow parts at Weekapaug B&T in Westerly Rhode Island and working that SW corner of the state... The dates are shaping up to be the 12-13 of ICt ober with Saturday the 13th the official day... Those dates are pretty concrete... Gotta run - baby's crying...

JCXX - never fished Rhody? As I'll have Patrick and the missus probably fishing with me, there won't be any long walks out to Napatree (well, the could always fish the mussel bed :D ;) ) but there are some horses to be found that time of year.... And probably the most concentrated area of big fish water in the northeast are to be found on the shores of 'Lil Rhody... Just wish I had more chance to fish it this year :mad:

So I've heard John. Acres and acres of schooling fish! I can't wait :D
