View Full Version : Flesh eating disease.
mikecc 08-09-2004, 08:28 PM Flesh eating disease.
Has anybody heard anything about this over the past few days?
I heard that one of my customers from Marion got it and is in rough shape. I’ll hold off on his name until I confirm.
Last year another person from marion got the same thing.
missing link 08-09-2004, 08:31 PM from eating fish...... i hope not.:(
mikecc 08-09-2004, 08:35 PM from either fishing with an open wound or getting hooked.
missing link 08-09-2004, 09:01 PM keep me updated please
Vectorfisher 08-09-2004, 09:17 PM I haven't heard anything recently but I do know that an open wound is an invitation to getting this. The victims often need flesh removed to avoid the spread of it. Make sure if you poke yourself with a hook, knife, etc that you put something on it, also be careful handling fish with cuts on your hands, this is a nasty thing to get.
maddog2020 08-09-2004, 09:42 PM I remember the story from previously about the fisherman who developed it after he had been cleaning a Bluefish and contracted it that way. Another guy was on a fishing vessel and met the same fate because of an open wound.
Its nasty - it starts eating away, hospital started cutting pieces of person off and then your organs shut down. :(
It is no joke. I guess this is another reason to promote catch & release. ;)
Jonny Bolt 08-09-2004, 10:18 PM Damn. I often cut, scrape, or poke myself when fishing and dont even realize it initially. Tonight for instance, I landed a schoolie in the marsh, and 5 minutes later I look at my right forefinger, and its smeared with blood. Nice cut right between the knuckles. Didnt even feel it lol.
Luckily, every fish I have caught in the Hampton Marsh has looked healthy so far. Havent seen any sores and ulcers on any fish.
This is pretty scary though.
Surfcastinglife 08-09-2004, 10:19 PM yea i remember hearing about it last year seemed very scary so ive been using garden gloves ever since :P
new jack 08-09-2004, 10:30 PM Photobacterium damsela is what causes flesh eating disease from fish. Most humans immune system is strong enough to take care of the invader. It's those who have some sort of severe immune deficiency that have to worry about it.
Notaro 08-10-2004, 08:53 AM damn, i fished with open wounds sometimes. but im suspecting that my immunity won't last if this continues. i got a staph from touching mackerel and hooking bait with an open wound.
It's hard to find a good pair of gloves that allow you to tie, to handle a fish, and to cast comfortable. And also to protect you from getting wet, sweating, and from the bacterias.
Mr. Sandman 08-10-2004, 09:03 AM My wife is a doc and she has seen this a few times. (I can't recall the name) but it is bad news. Spreads very fast and this thing is resistant to most antibiotics. There is one or two I think that work but when it becomes resistant to that we all are in deep trouble. If you see some infection that looks bad you will need serious attn. pronto! Don't just walk into some clinic...head to hospital that can deal with infectious diseases.
It is important to WASH your hands WELL with HOT water and Anti-bacterial soap each and every time you clean fish. Even the smallest knick in your hand is enough to introduce this to your system.
She showed me some photos of guys hands..very nasty, in some cases you will need to get it amputated to stop it from killing you. (no kidding)
Buy some good soap and wash up!
I am not 100% sure but I think this is it:

Surfcastinglife 08-10-2004, 09:40 AM i rather be sweaty and risk slipping a knot then gettin eaten alive by bacteria :P
Sweetieface 08-10-2004, 09:43 AM Ask Notaro about FEB. Last I'd checked, we had his Action Figure checked into the ER with a failed Kidney, liver disease and a wig! ;)
Notaro 08-10-2004, 11:11 AM :hidin:
justplugit 08-10-2004, 06:02 PM Yeah,it's nothing to fool with.My high school footbal coach died from it about 10 years ago when he cut himself while cleaning a bluefish.I always have cuts on my hands and carried some peroxide in the truck and slapped some on my hands after fishing for awhile, even though i C and R . but got lax and don't do it anymore.
Don't know if it would really prevent it,and it's no substitute for being aware and careful.
mikecc 08-10-2004, 06:08 PM Confirmed the guys name is Pete Kelly from marion he kept his boat in Fairhaven.
My thoughts and Prayers go out to his family
BasicPatrick 08-11-2004, 12:16 AM Pete is a member of the MA Striped Bass Advisory Panel and many have seen him at hearings...Word is that he has already had amputations and it is not good...those who pray please say one for Pete tonight, I will
BigFish 08-11-2004, 06:16 AM Come on Pete.....get better soon!:(
My heart goes out to him and his family.
Is there any confirmation as to whether or not this was fishing related?...
I believe the gentleman who died from this last year was from Halifax...
Got Stripers 08-11-2004, 06:34 AM I hate gloves, but considering I peel skin off my thumb and forefinger regularly from all the bass I catch, might be time to consider some sort of glove. The problem with gloves is the get wet and might actually be worst than just rinsing off in the salt after every fish. I know there are some thin neoprenes available, but those things get hot in the summer. Are any of those sun gloves the southern guides us waterproof?
schoolie monster 08-11-2004, 09:57 AM I hope its enough to use anti-bacterial soap when you get home. I am fanatical about washing my hands well when I'm home and when I have cuts, I use that purell anti-bact lotion. It stings like hell, but it gives me some peace of mind that I killed some micro bugs.
I was carrying that stuff on the boat too, but I'm out.
Cuts are unavoidable, I guess the best we can do is make sure we clean 'em out well.
Mr. Sandman 08-11-2004, 10:06 AM I hope he does well.
Go buy some powerful soap and wash up each and every time you handle fish. Get a big tube of neosporen ointment and put it on each and every knick you get after you have washed. Don't fool around with bugs like this.
I don't were gloves until it gets real cold (nov fishing) and then I use the neo's with the fingers slits (glacier gloves)
If I comm fished I would wear gloves no matter how hot.
Ever get spiked by a striper dorsel fin ? You need to deal with these too!! You can get a nasty infection (not just the flesh eating kind) that can put an end to your fishing for quite some time.

I got spiked last month. I washed my hands when I got home and put a band aid and a neosprin on it. I hope that it doesn't eat my itnernal organs. I am too young to die.
redlite 08-11-2004, 11:04 AM My thoughts go out to him and his family.
Since a few years ago when the first guy in that area it this flesh eating thing has been constantly on my mind. My hands look like raw hamburger right now and my skin is constantly peeling off my hands from wetness and handling bait and fish. Really scares the crap out of me especially with the number of fish that I have caught this year with what appear to be sores on them.
Hope he makes it.
Notaro 08-11-2004, 12:39 PM and also my thoughts and prayers go to his family, too.

My wife told me it was Captain Pete and hour ago :(
A good friend of mine sold him the boat he runs now. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family also. Very sad. Patrick is correct, he has already lost a leg. This bacteria moves VERY fast and is deadly dangerous. Be careful out there all of you.
Jonny Bolt 08-11-2004, 03:20 PM Oh my goodness. He has lost a leg??? I will be praying for him and anyone else who is infected with this. This is terrible.....
macojoe 08-12-2004, 08:49 PM I have heard that he lost the leg to the hip!! And he was also the guy involed in a fatal accadent in Vinyard Sound a couple of years ago??
Not going to good for him!! Hope he makes out !!
Jonny Bolt 08-12-2004, 11:08 PM I remember seeing something on TV a long rime ago about a guy who got this when he bumped his leg on a trailer hitch. Creepy
Can you get this from any fish....or just those with lesions or sores on them?
I'm gonna start using some leather work gloves :eek5:
I hope the guy is gonna be ok
Any report on how Pete is doing?...
striprman 08-14-2004, 11:47 AM HOUSTON - A man has died from flesh-eating bacteria that entered his body through a minor cut on his leg.
Dr. Kenneth Dean Creamer, 52, died late Thursday in a Victoria hospital where he had been treated since July 17, two days after he was exposed to the saltwater bacteria vibrio vulnificus.
Creamer, a Houston dentist, apparently hurt himself July 15 when he slipped on a dock during a fishing trip. Within days, both Creamer's legs had to be amputated and he went into a coma, a hospital spokeswoman told the Houston Chronicle for its Saturday editions.
Creamer is the seventh vibrio-related death in Texas this year, according to the Texas Department of Health. The federal Centers for Disease Control said a typical year brings 16 vibrio-related deaths in the Gulf Coast states.
Health experts said the bacteria is common in the Gulf and most prevalent in coastal and bay waters in warmer months. The bacteria can be ingested in contaminated seafood or absorbed through skin wounds.
JohnR 08-15-2004, 12:21 PM I had not followed this thread in a few days :( . This is very sad to hear. Thoughts and prayers to him & his family.
Slipknot 08-16-2004, 12:16 PM Just to give a brief update on Pete's condition. He made it thru some tough stretches and is out of the coma now. I think they moved him to another room. He will need lots of therapy unfortunately, but the good news is he is alive for now so the docs must have stopped the virus. Thank God!
My friend will be hauling his boat out shortly, one less thing to worry about.
If I hear more, I'll let you know.
we should band together in suport of this fellow fisherman!
Fly Rod 08-16-2004, 06:29 PM :) Before ya run out and buy all sorts of creams to smear on ya you should only need "BLEECH & water & soap or just plain Bleech & water mix!!!! It's the number one bacterial fighter and cost only pennies to use!!!! Mix about a cup to 5gals. of water!!!!
I keep a bucket of clean water & bleech on every trip mainly to just clean my hands evry once in a while after handling bait!!!! ;)
CANAL RAT 08-16-2004, 06:38 PM i keep at all times a bottle of hand sanitizer in my surf bag
