It ain't illegal in RI.You'll find no referance to gaffing being illegal in the full RI Saltwater abstract.

Check it out at www.state.ri.us/dem.

I gaffed every @#$%^^& Bluefish I caught yesterday //they were too big to left in ====then I went right up tight at Castle hill,, and thru them to the people on the rocks ,they just about killed each other trying to get too then ,, the smaller ones either I give to the lobster boat next to me ,or the go into my eel trap /that then becomes my green crab trap [[which someone cleaned out last week of over 200 green crabs///
no more BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOfish will leave alive again /////////////////////////////:smash: :smash:

I have gaffed fish from a boat many times. Not anything I am going to release though.

If I fished from a jetty more I would make a jetty gaff.

illegal? never heard of that!!

Very strange....

It used to be listed on the Mass Div of Marine fisheries website, and the saltwater fishing guide that gaffing of striped bass is illegal. I just went on line to check and it is no longer listed in either the guide or the regs? I decided to call the EP's to see if the law was changed, and from what they said it was. You cannot gaff a fish less than 28 inches, and you cannot gaff a fish you intend to release. They did say if it was a legal sized fish you can use a gaff.

Does anyone have a copy of last years saltwater fishing guide? I'm almost positive it was listed in there.

Anything over 30#'s now gets the gaff, this will make life a lot easier:-)

EP's # is (800) 632-8075 if anyone wants to confirm...

They did take the gaffing restriction off....

http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dmf/recreationalfishing/stripedbass.htm

They also changed the commercial wording to "hook and line only" from "rod and reel only".

When I am Commercial Bass fishing I gaff all that is leagle as there is no time wasted on landing a fish!!

But I very rarely gaff a recreation fish !!

Years ago when I use to fish the canale I made a gaff 10 feet long so i would not have to crawl down the rocks to get my fish.

gaffing and spearfishing stripers are both illegal in CT.

We also do not have a commercial fishery for stripers.
