I'm not sure about what others think but this past week of fishing sure reminds me of what I come to expect for Mid September.

What - all bluefish :smash:

I think the traditional first cold week of late August that gears things up happened early this year at the beginning of August so the feedbak might be earlier this year but I'm not seeing the same amount of bait as last year and that scares me a little...

John,

The reason is certain conditions I am seeing. The action at BI, the fish on the surface along South County, the bait action in tight to the beaches and the water temps all remind me of Mid September action.

Ive seen a ton of bait...
Certainly not the amounts I was seeing late sept/early october last year.. but sandeels and baby herring everywhere...

and this weekend was definitely crazy fish wise... so.. maybe?

Granted RI last weekend was nothing but blues for me.

I think its the recent conditions that have made the fishing so good. The pre-storm action both weekends was fantastic. This weekend, the combination of the wind and tides created fantastic white water and there was tons of bait. The action lasted until at least 8am, solidly from @ 4am.
I can't say I caught a ton of bass, but I got a few as well as some blues, and both weekends I witnessed other guys catching lots of bass, some were good size too. For awhile, it was fish on every cast.
So, I think its the conditions, not the season or an early migration. There are always bass around, you just need good conditions to drive them up against the shore.

Id be more worried that the projected strong hurricane season this year could shut down the fall w/ a few good storms

:) There has been no un normal movement of bait fish along Cape Ann!!!

The bait run generally starts in the middle of Sept. where you would see a dozen or so flocks of birds working the pods of bait close to shore!!! And some early mornings you would see birds working as far as the :eyes: could see!!!;)

Just bought a new surf bag that only holds a FEW plugs.

Pole, bag and waders(and eventaully the warm clothes) and nothing more than that.

Here's to an insane fall run(hopefully)!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind the early start as long as were still catching decent fish in November!:lasso:

I didnt notice the masses of bluefish blitzing behind my work like they have been this year lately till into september last year, been at it now for 2-3 weeks.

I am seeing more and more bait every day moving into the inner harbor. Even saw a school of peanuts in tight and judging by the big bluefish that ate my herring chunk last night, I'd say that they know the bait is here. Lotsa spike mackerel still present in the river and harbor.
