On Thursday Aug 26 I took the wife and kids to visit friends near CT/RI. We took an Oceanology Exploration trip which takes about 30 people on a small party-type boat to show how scientists gather information, etc. We measured salinity, temperature, oxygen levels and even dragged an otter trawl net for about 20 minutes in about 30 feet of water. When the net came up it was filled with life. Many spider crabs, a porgy, flounder, fluke (including a 4 pounder), and about a half dozen squid. We logged all the marine life and threw them back except for the squid which were pretty much dead.
When we got back to the dock, the guide said to stay for a moment to watch something. He started to throw squid strips in the water just off the port side and STRIPERS came out to feed. I counted 10 Stripers from about mid high teens to nearly 25 pounds. These fish were killing each other to get squid strips. One kid threw a small half clam shell in the water and it was immediately consumed (and then spit out). The guide said they have been feeding them all summer and it was a "trained" school. Every fish was a keepa and very aggressive. He was feeding them on a gin clear day at 2:30 on the afternoon. My rod was in the car and I was very tempted.
BTW, yes I took pictures but have not developed them yet. I'll post them when they are ready.

that would of been mildly twisted
imagine the horror in the kids eyes if you or someone else ran over and with a rod and gave them a closer look at them....

but that is pretty wild... :)

Actually the kids on this boat wanted to see and touch ALL the marine. They would have loved to see exactly what those stripers looked like up close and out of the water.
Fishing for them would have reminded me of my youth when we would fish for trout in the "stocked pond". It was fun then but I wouldn't do it now...
