View Full Version : Bomb Units, FBI, & Boston PD at the Copley Westin Hotel
JohnR 09-12-2001, 12:13 PM Bomb Units, FBI, & Boston PD are in the Copley Westin Hotel in Copely Square searching for suspects in the hotel, according to one of the local TV stations....
BTW - I don't know if the jets are flying but I could hear some about half an hour ago...
Slipknot 09-12-2001, 12:28 PM I think they were just looking for evidence, a little overkill I think. They are also doing the same in Newton at the Park Inn

Here is apicture from NY , I wanted to post under another topic , oh well.
TheSpecialist 09-12-2001, 03:42 PM They arrested someone at the Westin, and bomb sniffing dogs picked up a scent.
They have also arretsed a man in Providence that was on an Amtrak train from Boston.

Here is a link and on the main page is a picture of the guy in custody.
I also observed not only military aircraft, but I believe a commercial jet around 1pm. There were reports that the airlines were going to move plane around the country to get ready for the re-opening of the nations airports.
Patrick82 09-12-2001, 04:31 PM While I agree that we can't take any chances, I sure hope that Arabs don't become just another target because some jerks put them all in the same group as some terrorists. It would be a shame and counter productive.
Jaiem 09-12-2001, 05:02 PM As of this AM, fighter planes were still buzzing over NYC.
I heard from a friend there are Battleships (or cruisers?) off Long Beach.
JohnR 09-12-2001, 06:49 PM The jet aircraft I heard today were not fighter aircraft but either commercial air or transport. Maybe bringing supplies south to you folks. Logan is still closed and will not be reopened until thay can fully comply with the increased security requirements of the FAA. As an example, they are towing almost 3000 cars from airport parking lots to a nearby track BEFORE the owners can collect them and BEFORE they allow anything approaching normal flight operations to resume.
Patrick - I agree with you on that. We should not blanket all arabs OR muslims as evil. Find the bastards that did this and reply 100 fold but let's not stoop to their level and attack innocent civilians.
Cruisers Jaiem, more likely Burke class Destroyers as the Battleships have all been decommisioned. We have more of them than cruisers and they are terribly effective in the anti-air business. Their radar can tell between the left and right *** of a gnat at 300 miles (OK - maybe a little less than that). There's probably a picket fence of warships up and down the coasts in front of key population centers.
Jaiem 09-12-2001, 08:34 PM It was definatley fighter planes I heard this AM. I'm a (amteur) student of military planes and know the sound. Plus it was the same sound as yesterday. As of now no commercial flights are yet runnng.
Ships, planes etc won't matter. I don't think anything is going happen again for some time and even then it won't be the same. So it's like closing the barn door after the horse has run away.
NTL, it is important as a symbol at least.
nightfighter 09-12-2001, 08:48 PM Was woken at 4AM this morning by the sound of refueling tankers taking off from base near Durham NH. We figured they were refueling the fighters flying top cover up and down the coast and around the cities. Saw a single F 15 around Boston this evening and yesterday afternoon.
Mike P 09-12-2001, 08:51 PM The planes that flew over my house on LI this morning were definitely military, fighters, judging from the sound of their engines. Probably F-14s or F-18s from the George Washington.
Jaiem, I am glad your safe and my condolences for your co-worker's friends and family. Not to raise false hopes, but the reports are that a police officer who was on the 92nd floor at the time the tower collapsed was found alive. All hope is not lost.
John perhaps you heard some military transports, maybe C-141s? You live close to Green and Quonset? They landed C-5As at Green during the Blizzard of 78.
Jaiem 09-12-2001, 09:02 PM The news keeps saying F-16's but the plane I saw yesterday was definately a twin-engine jet. Didn't look like National Guard either. Probably Air Force.
TheSpecialist 09-12-2001, 10:15 PM I saw one F-15 early in the afternoon in Boston today, and later 2 F-14 around the same area. The othe plane could of been an AWACS, but it was too high to tell, or it could have been a comercial from Logan carrying medical supplies or rescue and medical personnel. They did let planes with those things take off from Logan last night.
Got Stripers 09-13-2001, 06:46 AM Even this thread is very disturbing. :(Who would have thought a month ago, the topic of discussion would be what type of military aircraft were overhead today. It's yet another reality we will have to get used to, because I think there will be a highly visible military for a while, especially after the you know what hits the fan after we start targetting those responsible.
JohnR 09-13-2001, 07:41 AM The individual arrested at Providence yesterday was not linked to the terrorist incidents. The knife he had was a ceremonial curved (I forget the name) knife worn in a sheath. Pretty illegal in one sense but on TOH a religous symbol of faith. Not Islam but another religoin of the middle east...
GS - when I lived in Germany, it was almost every day, we lived astride a NATO low level training route in SW Germany - interesting to say the least... Many states, it is normal for the AF & Navy jets to be around but we don't see it much in the northeat Metropolitan areas. For years, the policy has been to severely restrict military overflights over dense population centers to reduce the likelyhood of an accident. Those dangers are perhaps smaller in comparison to what could potentially still happen but Jaiem is correct, the horses have already run.
Jaiem, the ANG flies F-15As out of Otis AFB on Cape Cod (1 squadron of about 18 active planes - that's a guess)and 16s out ot upstate NY (I think Plattsburg or Syracuse). There are also F16s out of Atlantic City NJ (may have been closed) and Burlington Vermont (may have been closed).
If anyone has fished the east end of the Vineyard (as well as Nantucket), ESPECIALLY Wasque with any regularity, you've heard the Air Force playing around. That is Otis AFB's sandbox with alot of 15s and 16s in the area... I love it when that happens, I get to combine fishing :D with my love of air shows :D ...
Blitzseeker 09-13-2001, 11:46 AM I work in the office space above the Copley Mall(Copley Place), which is also attached to the Westin.
Yesterday I saw the FBI/SWAT guys charging through the mall, headed for the hotel. (I can see down to the mall through my window to the attrium.)
They locked us down, saying no one could leave. We all started watching CNN. Seemed like things were calming down until they announced that the bomb dogs had gotten a sniff of something. I would generously estimate that our office space was emply in three minutes following that statement. People were just gone...computers on, items left on desks, etc.
That was the second straight day we've been evacuated...we're right between the Prudential & John Hancock buildings so we were evacuated on the day of the attack as well.
We're back again today, but as you might guess people are still a little tense.
Amazing when it hits so close to home. Was scary enough watching what happened in NYC & Washington, but when SWAT guys start coming through where you work you realize pretty quick that a whole new world has arrived. I turned out to be nothing, but we sure didn't know that at the time. My wife still hasn't stopped shaking....she was watching the SWAT guys run by my office building live on CNN, and listening to them report that the dogs had found bombs. Not good.
Stay safe, everyone.
