i have a kayak and love it. there are probably less than a dozen people on this site that own one for fishing :)

I believe that qualifies as a boat....

I am having a great season. The fish are thriving in my area. Although this weekends east winds made things tough there was still nice bass on patrol. I have had one 40 lb bass caught a week ago and a dozen bass from 30-38lbs thru the summer. 15-25lb bass are possible on every trip out especially this past August. So needless to say it has been a great season and we still have the fall run! A fifty would be nifty!

I have been using other peoples kayaks for the past two years. Definitely my next investment. My biggest from the yak this year is 20#. Here she is.

My feet were on the beach. A slightly different spin on using the kayak to catch bass. I call it kayasting. Biggest fish trolling was only @ 30". Do kayasting fish count???

It's a lot of kayakers here. We just stick to the beach part of fishing while on s-b.com. Congratulations on the 41lb bass... how was the sleigh ride :cool:

It would be nice to have a Yak forum here because we learn from each other. And RI have some serious area for yakfishing. :)

Just picked up my first yak Tarpon 140, it is already set up pretty sweet for fishing but I would love to see some pics of other guys yaks. A kayak fishing forum sounds pretty good to me.
I figured this was the next step, I used to sweet water fish from my belly boat and it was a blast hooking up and getting spun around. Can't wait to get out there..
I am pretty sure I have the essentials, but it never hurts to listen to people that have experianced it and have learned lessons...

I don't Kayak fish but I think a Kayak Forum would be a good idea.

For one it would help increase membership on this site, and two it may get some guys interested in it that currently don't know anything about it.

Surfcaster trapped on a kayak.

Although its not a yak...I picked up an old beat up lowes aluminum 12footer this summer for 60 beans. Best 60 I ever spent. (worth that in scrap metal I believe) It fits in the back of my S-10 and now I can get to the places I could never cast to.. for example Dutch Island. My buddy has a lil 2.5 hp kicker we call the blender he uses for a back up on his 20 ft cape codder. We throw this thing on the back, bring a 5 gal and we can go just about anywhere in decent weather. I :love: it. Also this summer...killed two birds with one stone. On nice moonlit nights. Me and the g/f, a bottle of wine (for her), oars, EG bay, Harborside music, and bass galore...:hee:

Guys who flyfish from a yak are actually trolling and I have always had a problem with trolling flyfishermen. I thought that flyfishing purists frowned upon that, trolling that is. Maybe I'm wrong. Not trying to piss anyone off with this pos, because I am actually quite interested in buying a yak, but hesitate in going further with any thought of it becasue of what I just mentioned. I would appreciate everyones opinon as far as flyfishing is concerned from a yak. It looks like great fun.

I am no purist, I like to fish with all types of gear, but I do love to fly fish and fishing out of a kayak opens up alot of great options. Gets you to spots that are not accessable by foot and you can fish some awsome rocky structure that is to dangerous for a regular boat. And when your paddling from spot to spot why not troll. Picked up some great fish that way. Trolling flies for salmon has a very long history.

I found it tough at first to fly fish off the kayak. Postion is important. There is no rule on how it's done. I got help from a few seasoned kayak fly anglers. I mostly use a sink line 350 grain with floating running line and also use a full floating line. The floating running line allows me to strip into the water and still be able to shoot. Most of the time I really don't need to cast more then 40 feet as the kayak gives me the stealth I need to get in close to Bass. I could strip into my lap or basket but find the water better suited and I get less tangles. If it's windy I use a drift sock to stay in postion. If it's faster moving water I have to strip into my lap or deck floor but risk tangles more then 1/2 the time. A guess a basket could be an option but I don't feel like carrying more gear. Sit in kayak owners or Sink owners have a nice system for flycasting by stripping onto the spray skirt. Still takes getting use to as well. For years we all have stood and casted from shore or standing up in a boat. Now we are sitting down. Easier for some, harder for most.

I had a Malibu Extreme SOT kayak that I was able to stand up in and fly cast and land fish. That was a blast. Took practice but it was a blast sight casting.

If I was to fly cast more then 50 percent of the time I would look for another SOT kayak that had a flat floor and little clutter. WS has that Luxury in the Tarpon series kayaks.

When the wind's blow foul the yak's come out and get slid into the sweetwater for lrg.m. bass.. yak's are :cool: they'll get you into place's you'd never get to walk into and fish.
