Are you asking for a reel suggestion, rod or both? For 1-4oz plugs I use a abu 6500 c3, soon to be pro rocket hopefully with a St.croix ASRC100M its a 10' stick. Pretty sweet combo for the price will throw plugs as light as mambos/bombers or up to 3 1/2 wood. If I had the money though I would probably get a 1204.

Daiwa sealine-x rods are good and they go for about 75$. I would say they are better than the ticas.

another vote for a sealine. my cousin uses one, its nice. guides are ok, you might wanna replace the crappy tip top though, or have some spares.

this is what i would buy if i didnt want to spend an arm and a leg.

I would be careful using braid and a fast action, stiff rod for throwing eels. Learn to have your thumb ready to clamp down in an instant when the eel flies off to the right and the hook lands at your feet ;)

If you want to throw eels with braid, the ticket is a rod with either a fast action and soft tip, or a parabolic rod that bends continuously for 1/3 to 1/2 its length.

Might be a bit much to expect one conventional rod to throw 1 to 4 ounces. That's fairly wide range IMO, you might be better served with 2 rods.

ive been using a 10' tica with an abu 7000ce this year with stren super braid, its been working good for me. throws everything pretty good but a mombo is a bit lite for it. i drilled two holes in a 7 inch mombo added a few split shots and its workin good, but i would agree that having two rods would be a better bet, or atleast not the tica 10'.

The Diawa Sealine is a good cheap rod. Have thrown 3.5oz plugs and eels with it.The tip will come un-done but easily replaced. If your just looking for a cheap 2-piece thats the one.Beat the crap out of mine and still handled fish to 40#. But if your gonna do a lot of canal work, get a nice custom stick.

A loomis 1266/2 will do it well. An Arra 1322 will do it too but 4 OZ is pushing it IMO. An Arra 1205 will do it but not too good at 1 OZ. An allstar 1266 will do 2 to 5 but not the 1 OZ. I think you could also use an Allsatr 1208. As Fishweewee said , two rods would cover it better , especially since you mention the canal as an application.

For slinging heavy stuff get a tsunami 11' you can usually find them cheap for around $80 shipped on e-bay if your lucky enough. I got that setup with a 7001 Abu BG.

For getting into the lighter lures like 7/8-2oz I like my 8' and change GSB 108 1L. I had some of the butt cut and it works well with my Abu 6501.

On the lighter setup I have braid, only because I can't really put the pressure on with larger fish. On the heavy setup it's either 25# big game or 30# Yozuri, depending on where I'm going.

There really isn't a happy medium because one day you might want to throw some small bucktails in the slack water and find your casts only going 20'.

I've tried the smaller Tsunami's like the 8 and 9' conventionals they are ok but lack that extra "umph" on the casts and might make you forget how large that fish is on the other end.

If you go with Tica replace that tip. I've been the hero more then once on outings with friends when the tip just snaps off.
