That's right folks...

The newest creation and first lure from the newlty formed "Al Gags Custom Lures" is hitting stores right now.

It is called the Squid-Zee and looks just like a small Squid. The body is made of ABS plastic and is very hard and solid. Around 5 1/2 inches long with two small wings up top tapered thicker towards the bottom (7/8 inch) head with large eyes. I was suprised at the hardware which is much better than Al's previous creations. It is wired through with a heavy duty split ring and large stainless siwash on the bottom. (lots of potential for hand tied tails, rubber skirts, etc.etc.)

The ones I got ahold of were both weighted (2 3/8 oz and unweighted at 1 oz)

The first color is marbled pink in the old Atom coloring style. Rumor has it they are also coming out in Yellow and Green.

I through it this weekend at a few places including the Canal. I caught fish in two of three places. At the canal I absolutely hammerred the fish with it. However it was not fair as the bass & blues were spitting up small Squid.

What I found interesting was that it cast farther than my 3oz Kastmaster with bucktail. NO BS, I couldn't beleive it myself.

1...You can fish it like a tin...long cast and just reel back in swimming.
2...You can cast it out, crank it up top and retrieve slowly like a needle.
3...You can Cast it out, let it sink and slowly retreive it in a verticle sweep type of action (this is what worked in the Canal)

Definately on a rebound fron the problems of the Slammer...I think Al is back to Mambo fish catching ability with this one.

I can't wait to throw this on MV...

Hey John r...I got a couple testers for you

:D :D

TLap,

I was only referring to the Original weight changes in the slammer...As is right now it catches fish quite well...not ot mention it is as good from a boat as it is from shore and that can not be said about most lures

Thanks Bettle for the pictures, interesting simple looking plug. I can see why it would cast far now. Should be easly for all you plug builders to near duplicate.

Yes it does but it sure is catching fish for me...over 30 blues and 15 Bass in 4 trips....largest bass is 36.5 inches so far

Next week the Yellow, black and Amber colors come out:D

I am not saying it is the best lure ever made, just that it is catching fish, casts a mile and is very durable...all for short money

Casts like a freakin' missile! No bass today but the bluefish at Monomy point thought it was tasty. Casted into a pod O' Albies with it too, no takers there. I gotta go lay down and stretch now the bum weather report that called for 5 to 10 northeast was really 15 to 20 and from Monomoy point back to Stage Harbor in a 14 foot tin skiff it's a long painfull ride, up and down, up and down bang, crash slam!!!!

After the meeting last night, I had a chance to toss a few..I threw the pink, as well as the yellow..and do these things fly... I did get a few on the pink, and a blue on the yellow, tried 3 types of retrieves..the let it drop then retrieve in a swoop worked best, IMHO... was only out for a few hours had to stop at 3:30, I had to get to work today..so I could nap...I will be throwing these again, for sure....

I'll call ya tomorrow.
I think that the vinyl would make it a better lure but somehow hair is a standard on wood. <the lure is wood; isn't it??>.
If it had some nice 3-4 inch pink hair on the siwash it would be a cross between a large bucktail and a parachute....

I think you're right. The first post indicates it is plastic. Somehow I thought I saw woodgrain in the pictures.
I wonder if any of our woodturners could make one out of wood???

Luhr Jenson make a nice little pink hoochie squid that would be a perfect trailer for a siwash.. i think a dab or 2 of zapagap would hold it on nicely.

Surely Bassy,

The posts suggesting a trailer were expected. The reason Al did not choose one trailer is that there is a miriad of possibilities that would work well. He chose the hook style to accomodate many different trailers.

tossed the pink today. It went out like a bullet,
screaming through the air, defying the wind.

At a quick retreive it scooted across the surface.
A bit slower and it moved just below and so on.

However,
When I stopped the retrieve it fell straight to the bottom.
I was expecting more of an angled descent away from me.

When it got closer I could see that when under the surface it was at close to 45 degree angle. not what I was expecting.

It really needs wider fins at the tip to get that backwards fall.
and a little better weight distribution to lessen that angle.

have you fished a Habs needlefish?? they ride at a 45° angle and are proven cow killers.. the key is the 45° angle. As you reel in slowly it will suspend. if you stop your retrieve, it will go down, and if you reel in fast it will rise. Now thats all about the Habs, and I havent tried these squidzees yet, but if they ride at 45 then i am psyched, because I will fish them like a haaabs:humpty:

furthermore, if you were to place a habs in the water , and drop the plug, it would glide backwards because there is no line tension. I would bet that the squid plug would do the same thing. But because its attached to your line, its keeping it from going backwards, and just goes down like a habs does. Does this make sense??

MikeTLive
09-25-2004, 09:25 PM
I have never fished a habs anything.
Curious, why would a 45° drive the fish wild?

Dropping these into the water they go straight down. Al said they would glide backwards but mine did not. Anyone seen otherwise? How about sending me a Habs needlefish to learn with?

I really need to get fishing with folks that "know what they are doing" Anyone mind if I tag along and watch them fish so I can learn?

Nebe
09-26-2004, 02:51 AM
the angle doesnt drive the fish wild, but instead it helps you control the depth of the lure... its like an airplane wing. because the snout of the plug is facing up, and the tail is down, when retrieving it, the water is pushing on its belly. this is what makes it suspend... you stop and it sinks, speed up, more water is pushing on its belly, so it goes up. Now if the plug was sitting in the water totally horizontal, it would do the same thing, but it would be harder to control depth, especialy getting it to go up....this is why i loose 3 times as many superstrke needles than habs needles. :smash:

agian, I need to fish one of these squids myself, but thats why 45° is a nice feature in my book.

try fishing it with a light weight braid, jig the rod tip and make sure you give it total slack, who knows it might dart backwards and you arent noticing it...

Iwannakeeper
09-27-2004, 09:11 AM
I have only fished it at night. But from what I can tell it is a nice working lure. For sure it casts like a dream. I couldn't see alot of the action, but what I saw up close I liked. I should have thrown a spot light on it for my last retreive of the night, but I didn't

It didn't catch any fish that night :smash: but neither did anything else. Actually, my fiance caught a skate on a mackeral chunk, but I wasn't counting that.

Everybody talks about distance on casting... but how many of those who go the distance actually land a large one out there?

Most I speak with land theirs fairly close to the shoreline...

Just food for thought...

BigFish
09-27-2004, 02:30 PM
Ditto that Bliz!;) I get mine out there pretty good...only because I like to work more water.....but most of my fish hit within a gentle toss away!:D

reelecstasy
09-27-2004, 02:38 PM
My take on the distance thing is, with no effort at all it flies and where i have been throwing it, it has some good depth 30-40' at low tide, so with the distance with no effort it gets out there and it allows it to swoop downward and in so i can get it deep while it is realitively still a good distance out, ya know...wow that was a long ramble to say that, I needs some sleep
