Finally had them take the blown engine apart to see what happend. No sign of overheating and it looks like everthing was well oiled. Everything looked great. Infact I was supprised to see how clean everthing was inside.
What appears to have happend is the 2 dollar bolt that holds the lower bearing on either backed off or possibly broke off once that came off it went to hellinahandbasket pretty quick, the connecting rod is banged up and the top part of the bearing is split from banging around in there...but again, no sign of bad lube or overheating.

Sad a 2 dollar part cause a castrophic problem like this. Time to move on.

SM:

Get the broken piece of the bolt to me and I'll tell you why it broke.

This is what I do for a "so called" living......

Did the same thing on a broken head bolt I found on my ficht, no harm done with that though (LUCKILY)

Van,

I will see what I can do. There was an insurance investigator looking at it today and he thought the engine looked really clean, well maintained and there was nothing mechanically wrong with it prior to it blowing up. He was picking thru the "rubble" he may have taken a few parts back. Once they resolve this (should be soon) I will dispose of all these parts on ebay probably or sell the pair (one working and one for parts )

The new engine has been OK. While I prefer twins I have to say the fuel econ on this engine is impressive. I go for weeks without a fill up now. I honestly thought the fuel gauge was wired wrong as the needle was pegged on the "Full" pin for so long. I honestly checked the wiring on the gauge after using the boat for a week. The downside is medicore performance compared to the twins. But it starts and runs when I turn the key so I am happy.

OK SM:

If you can get either side of the broken bolt and the fracture looks intact, I can do some quick tests (free to you) and determine if it was a defective bolt, or caused by outside stresses.

I determined that the broken bolt I found in my ficht was a defective heat treat, luckily I found it and being an external intake bolt there were no issues. Just got the end out and put a new one in. I have not found any more broken, so I am hoping it was a isolated problem, not a problem with all the bolts heat treated in the same lot. which could also be installed on my powerhead.

Personally I'll take a injected 2 stroke over a 4 stroke anytime.

JMHO.....

My buddy just got a new yammy 225hp Four Stroke. It is a real
nice motor. Silent is the word I was looking for. I couldn't believe just how silent it is. A lot better than my Johnson I'll say that.

that is what I have now. yami 225 4 stroke. lost 12 knots in speed from twin 150 two stokes but it is quiet at idle...at speed it is somewhat quieter but not much...has a different sound a deeper tone to it. The best thing is the fuel economy. It burns a lot less. Oh yeah...no oil to deal with...that is a nice treat. But I miss the top end. (50 to 38). One thing about 4 stokes they troll far better then 2 strokes. You can idle these all day without problems. But the weight, cost and reduced power are drawbacks.

They need to get more power out of those 4 stroke motors IMO. Sounds like they are trying. Once they do that I think the move will be in the 4 stroke direction.

So far it is reliable. My buddy bought twins of these same engines and he loves them ...has 250 hours already this season without missing a beat...i only have about 75 (but the derby is just starting)

The new Etec 225 I heard the other day has the same db's at idle less at WOT and same at cruising as the Yam 225 4 stroke and it makes it horsepower (225) at a much lower RPM I got a chance to look this motor over and here it run a week ago, I will get a test ride the week of the 20th. To say the least Bombardier has produced a winner only question is longevity of electronics, the blocks are exactly the same as the 3.3 litre Fichts with different electronics, injectors, cowling, lower unit.

Oh yeah fuel economy is equal to or better than Yam's 4 stroke:D And the computer can be programmed to run XD 100 bio degradable oil at a 100 to 1 ratio

Be my guest...I'll let you be the first to experiment with an Etec. Remember the company history. Tell me how it goes.

Sandman believe or not these motors have been released to government use and have also been released oversea's these aren't OMC and Bombardier isn't going anywhere anytime soon, they have put there company at stake over these motors I don't believe they would rush them to market if they weren't ready. If I could get a deal on one I would be all over it in a second but Bomb is being a bit stingy with me:D Besides my 99 still runs
