View Full Version : Need You're prayers Guys!
teaser 09-24-2004, 06:23 PM A little off topic but my family and I need you're prayers for my fishing partner ... my dog "Squirt".
He has been my fishing partner for all 7 of his years, and is in the hospital now facing a rather chancy surgery.
It started 4 days ago, I gave him a ham bone as a treat and being a rotty it didn't last very long.
Well the bone I found out has splintered into sharp chunks and is lodged in his colon.
After 18 enema's by 4 different vets, and even them trying to reach it through his anus to pull it out was to no avail.
He has a rock solid ball about the size of a lemon stuck and there is no way he can pass it, the opening just won't let it get any further and trying to grab it or break it up to smaller pieces only pushes back down further.
So now he's going for surgery tonight at 10:30 and its a 50-50 chance he won't survive the surgery because of contamination once they cut the colon open to remove the obstruction.
So please guys say a little something for him for me and my family as he is one of the family, it may sound funny but he is as important to me as my daughter is.
You's that have pets know what I mean, and please no wise cracks about if I care so much for him then why did I give him the bone in the 1st place, I feel bad enough already.
Thanks to everyone who wishes him well for us!

Don't beat yourself up about the bone thing, I give mine bones all the time, guess I'll be more careful now. Good Luck.
teaser 09-24-2004, 10:20 PM Just got the call from the surgeon ...
HE MADE IT !!!!!
He got through the surgery like a champ! Now we have to leave him with the vet for the next 5 days.
The next 2-3 days are the most crucial for him, they have to see if any complications set in, infections and stuff.
You guys are the greatest! Sending your best wishes and prayers mean and meant alot to me and my family and of course to Squirt!
He ate a rock 6 years ago and had surgery for that but that was an easier procedure according to the vet, I know one thing...I will never give him another bone...EVER!
As soon as he comes home (soon I hope) I will post a picture of him saying "THANKS!"
But I may need a little help at that time telling me how to post pics, because I know he'd like to say thanks in a picture of him holding a striper in his mouth for you's.
You guys are AWESOME!!!
Please keep up the good thoughts until he's home with us again.
Thanks to all,
Teaser and family and of course Squirt

MikeTLive 09-24-2004, 11:39 PM Glad your friend for life is on the mend!!
Many good thoughts to you and your dog!!
a note to others on the board follows -
You are, unfortunately, not in the minority.
My wife works for a vet and volunteers at the local shelter.
You would be amazed how many people do not know that it is always a bad idea to give dogs (or cats) bones to chew on.
Dogs tend to gulp things down after a couple chomps, and after years of domestication they have mostly lost the ability to process the bones the way their ancestors (wolves) do.
Same for housecats.
Chicken bones can be really bad news as they do tend to splinter and can do the same damage to a cat as you have had to your dog.
afterhours 09-25-2004, 07:06 AM ALRIGHT!!!:D THAT'S WHAT WE LIKE TO HEAR!
redneck24 09-25-2004, 08:02 AM GLAD TO HEAR IT!
Moses 09-25-2004, 08:27 AM Thats good news to hear!:D
fishaholic18 09-25-2004, 08:34 AM Awesome, I'm glad to hear that!!!:btu: :btu:
JohnR 09-25-2004, 09:12 AM Good news - good luck
piemma 09-25-2004, 10:09 AM There is a God!!! Glad to here the good news. I have 2 pooches and everytime one gets sick (which isn't too often) it's like one of my kids are sick.
BTW, never give a dog any kind of pork or chicken bones, they splinter. at least that's what we were told long ago
StripinLine 09-25-2004, 10:17 AM My Husky had a chance encounter with what we think is a roty/black lab mix. one of them is yours if you want...

partsjay 09-25-2004, 10:30 AM Glad to hear you dog pulled through. I have a pooch as well and completely understand how important they are to a family. Not sure how I would be able to handle something like that either. My best to your whole family.....
tynan19 09-25-2004, 10:49 AM Glad he made it. Also have a dog and understand you feelings.

MrsSFrances 09-25-2004, 04:33 PM From one bonehead (i call them boneheads) owner to another...good to hear that he made it through....
below, datyn my bonehead...
MikeTLive 09-25-2004, 04:44 PM If you are going to give your pet a chewy bone, get the large nylon ones. Even the rawhide bones, if not regularly replaced, can cause problems if they are swallowed in whole or in part.
All animal bones are unsafe for pets to chow down on.
Please let us know how your baby comes along!!
outfished 09-27-2004, 01:53 PM Great news for a change, glad everything "came out" okay. Had a rotty myself once, best darn dog in the world. A friend once had a dobie, dogs at home alone one day and figured out how to open the fridge and ate many pounds of raw pork ribs, bone and all:yak: Pooch lived after a gruelling week of pain and the S%#ts.
Katie 09-27-2004, 02:58 PM yay! good to know he made it! i have my own puppy mel golden retriever turning 3 this year, if anything happend to him like that i dunno what i would do. or if anyone's dog got sick like that.. hope all is well with everyones dog/puppy :D:D:D:D:D
