Borrowed a real Lefty from a friend and decided to make a few since we here in New England have virtually no access to these. I used a slightly smaller lip so down sized the plug body accordingly. 2 green ones and the original will be going to NJ later in the week.

The plug on the far right is the original Lefty! right?

Karl F

Well, if it is, that would explain the authentic look of the eye!

Thanks for the compliments. The plug on the right is the original. Leftys are sold in NJ at the Berkley Striper Club and Asbury Park fishermans flea markets. The line at the door is split up sometimes, 1 line for general admission and one line for Leftys. I hear some years he gives out tickets and always sells out. This size is done in small quantities each year. So like I said we have no access to them at all without going to NJ. Plus they are 35 bux down there if ya can find them. So I built a few to see what all the fuss is about. Guys down in NJ and NY go nuts over his plugs. The hangers are a PIA.

Last spring Lefty sold out 350 plugs in 45 min. People go nuts for these. They get in line way early in the morning and get a number that will allow them to buy 4 plugs only.

Eben, I have a few of the Cannon Lures, which are the Lefty knockoffs, and $20 at that. Not really something worth having for New England waters, IMO.
Almost all the southern state plugs are a light cedar, which Im not fond of for fishing our waters

Eben the 2 on the left are cannon lures. And like Krispy says they are light

Yeah, but on a calm windless night, one of those chucked over a bolderfield would be deadly... Especially at this one place that we call $#@$^@#^$#@ :hihi: I might have to make some :hee:

I dunno , I've got a schweet BBJ, I wouldn't part with for $40

I remember a discussion on the boards that no plug was worth $30..... I dunno about that..... if you figure time and craftmanship on a lot of these customs, plus hardware, paint, epoxy, and wood, never mind tools and electricity....... ain't nobody gonna get rich at $30, or even $40......

Be careful keeping the pink eye so close to the other plugs....the yellow one looks like it's starting to catch it already ;)

Great job.....spitting image of the original :btu:

Try making what?.. The Lefty? or plugs...
I wouldnt make it, cuz I'd never throw it. Not for $40 and not fer $4. Im sure it swims nice, but I couldnt leave it in my bag long enough to find the decent conditions needed to throw it

and one of mine went for more than that last year :D

In order for me to be able to make a living building plugs, I'd have to be able to cut my time per plug down from about 1 hour down to 12 minutes and charge 20 bucks per plug.

Feels good doesnt it?? I have to admit the plug was a glass one.. If it was one of my wood ones I would be jumping for joy

I could never and will never(well never say never) make plugs to make $$$ The only way i think it would be realistic would be to sub out the turning to a big time turner with the right gear and then solely paint and assemble. The repetition would drive me insane though:jump1: I have such respect for the pros who do this full time.

Right , and to make a plug in 12 minutes I would need 5 employees making it senseless to do.

When I quit college I tried a job in a machine shop I was some guys assistant but some of the times I sat at machines and ran them, and it was so boring the time went by so slowly, I didn't last 2 weeks.

75 g's would be a reasonable years salary for 50 weeks of making high end plugs, but it's kinda tedious work doing such a large volume. Kind of takes the fun out of it.

Tagger's right, to mass-produce plugs is factory work, and it does suck. I try to do what interests me at the moment and when that run is done, so am I for the most part. I truly don't understand how Habs and Tattoo can do what they do. Tens of thousands of top notch plugs year after year is HARD work. I'm glad and grateful that they do it, but I just can't. So when I say "40 bucks!!" it's just the little Scott in me betraying his thriftyness. I mean really what else made custom , by a Master's hand, in this world can be had for such a price.

Mac, I was thinking about them the other day. I've never seen one. Can you post some info on sizes, weights, lips, etc. based on what you know of them? I've heard great things about them.

And they need to consistently catch year after year to form the reputation they have. Hobbies soon become work when your income depends on it.

Mac the leftys are 25 bucks each and yes u can get them in jersey lefty gives out tickets before u get in the flea markets. You need a ticket to go to his table and on that ticket min is one max is 4 swimmers but they are sweet and one of the best action i have ever seen....
