Anyone have any experience on keeping eels alive for 7-14 days?? Im looking to have a stash at the house because i wont be able to get to the tackle shop regulary for a month. I was planning on using a large tub or fish tank, an airator and some ammo-carb. ALso was maybe gonna use frozen 2 liter bottle to put in it to keep the temps down.

The tackle shop I work at keeps them alive in a 60 gallon tank type thing with about a foot and half of water. We use two airarators hooked up to two of those aquarium stone things. We keep like 80 eels in there with no problems. I don't think you will have to worry about the water temps, especially if they are kept outside. Make sure you put a top over the tank if not they will find a way to get out.

NOTICE- LONG TERM STORAGE 7-14 DAYS

I already use a bucket for a couple of day storage.

i kept 10 for 2 weeks, 1 died.:D

i religiously iced them. like 3 times a day.

I ussally work 4 doubles at work in a row and cant ice them 3 times a day. Looking to keep around 30-40 eels. If you put that many in a bucket the mortality rate is very high.

Ive been using the eel bucket to store smaller numbers for a couple of days and it does work great.

alot of people i know use a basic 55 gallon tank from the pet store, with some form of filtration attached,fluvals, hang-on types etc. Most people will keep the tank in the basement to keep it cool but i know one guy who has an aquarium chiller attached to his tank with a dual temp controll:confused: the thing cost him like 500 bucks!!!:smash:

How often should i change the water with 30-40 eels in a 30 gallon tank? SO i dont need to put any frozen 2 liter bottles in to keep temps down?

If you have a place that you could put some type of cage in the river/bay where no one would tamper with them that would be the best bet!

But I would think if you have an aerator in the 30 gallon tank you wouldnt have to change the water too often?

I know Clammer keeps his eels alive for a good length of time using an aerator in a plastic bin in his garage......... with good success!

You want need to change the water too often. We change the water about 2 a month. If you are going to do this again in the future by some "Bait Saver" it is a blue powder substance that you put in the tank everyonce in awhile, it will help. The frozen two liter wont really do to much, if you are worried about the temp just put a bag of ice in it. Eels are tough, think about how many fish you have cought on one eel, they are hard to kill.
