View Full Version : Fall run/midterm report
Striperhound 10-04-2004, 04:27 PM 1st week of October, cold snap coming this week, How is everyones fall shaping up? Everything seems to be starting a little late this year, is that everyones experience this fall? Not looking for specifics just how would you rate it so far!
ThrowingTimber 10-04-2004, 04:49 PM slow here... But I did see a 44.20 weighed in on Sat night... and a 14.44 blue... It seems to be a "boat thing" so far, all these storms must be pushin' 'em out somewhere .. Was just about to bust loose when I left the land of rainbow flags and limp wrists.... lots of choppers, busting my ;) umm stuff to get fish with stripes :D I'm cursed with amber eyed fish, if this keeps up I'm going to start feeding my neighbors... Going to do the rock crawl this week and leave the sand sissy stuff for the weekend  see what happens...
BrianS 10-04-2004, 06:48 PM This weekend was WAY slow
My uncle popped a 39" bass at the canal within the first 20 mins on Friday.. but then the next 7 hours were SLOOOOOOOOW.. Schoolies galore on storms.. but not even the blues were really touching eels...
Last night in RI out in the boat, WAY slow.. no bass.. couple big blues.... thats it..
Ill be going out back to the canal one morning this week. Hopefully its a little better.
riverrat2 10-04-2004, 07:15 PM Slow on the cape this weekend too. IT SHOULDN"T BE SLOW. Something is wrong, the water is still warm and I am hoping things are just a little late this year.
spence 10-04-2004, 07:31 PM Saturday was hot until we quite because of lightening. Sunday blew...
-spence
Roseneath 10-04-2004, 07:37 PM Fished a few hours in Newport Sunday evening.... nothing. But I did get to try out my new Korkers . I can't believe it took me this long to buy a pair.
Caught more of the same in So Co this evening.
:smash: :D
Got Stripers 10-04-2004, 07:40 PM Last two weeks and two trips out, I've had to put too many miles on the boat to find schoolies to catch. The weather makes it tough for me to get out farther to explore, but it's far too slow for my tastes, but I did see a lot of bait this last time out so maybe they aren't far behind.
Codfather4 10-04-2004, 08:05 PM This fall on the south shore has been miserable. I remember this time last year I was absolutely killing them
cheferson 10-05-2004, 12:30 AM Last night was great after 2am, good amount of fish up to the low 20's. Pissed off , left at 400am to go meet my friend and go out on his boat on newport, and the bastage never showed up!!!!:af: :af: :af: :af: :af:
Striperhound 10-05-2004, 05:18 AM What Im getting at is the water still seems pretty warm for this time of year, good amounts of bait and fish still well inside Narragansett bay. The clock says the migration should be in full swing but is it yet? Maybe someone can chime in from Boston North do you still have fish in good numbers? Questions, Questions?
Albies and Blues are here in good numbers although many are not showing on the surface. The bass bite is ok also but should get better.
Maine Jigman 10-05-2004, 06:34 AM Maine fishing in upriver areas is still very good... guys along the coast however are slow... real slow compared to last year.. they are also claiming a lack of bait... upriver is bait galore, prolly why the fishing is so good... usually good to near the end of October when the river hits 50 it's all over but the cryin'.. temp around 64 now... still good..
headed down to the canal when my fish quit up here.. :D
lennyr 10-05-2004, 06:48 AM Very slow here. See alot of bait, but none of the striped ones. Plugging just about every day late afternoon till after dark from shore.
tynan19 10-05-2004, 09:00 AM Last week had four days off from work. Off Monomoy caught 6 keepers to 30lbs. and 30 blues. Canal I caught a couple blues on eels and a bomber. Fished Misquamicut on Sunday and the wind kept the fish offshore. Could see tons of fish and birds but they were a couple hundred yards out.
RIROCKHOUND 10-05-2004, 09:03 AM Hit or miss here...
Nothing is gauranteed; hit a spot that should produce given wind/tide for Oct.. and squat..
go elsewhere and find em...
RIJIMMY 10-05-2004, 09:13 AM I've been consistently catching small fish, 20" to 26". Mostly at night and early am.
Random bluefish.
I was catching more fish in August.
RIROCKHOUND 10-05-2004, 09:20 AM And bigger fish in July (for me)
cheferson 10-05-2004, 09:45 AM Sweet night, bass to the mid 20's on eels . Drove to another spot for sunrise, pull up and see about 50 cormaranants working bait in the water:happy: . Massive amounts of 4-6 bunka. Caught countless blues from 630-10, biggest was 14lbs. No bass ,but i did see some rolling around in the surf.
eelslinger 10-05-2004, 06:09 PM http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dmf/marinefisheriesnotices/whiteshark/ws13.jpg
"God, Mike, I don't get it. This is my best spot. I haven't had a hit in 2 weeks, not even a schoolie! It makes me wonder what I am missing."
ThrowingTimber 10-05-2004, 08:44 PM :laughs:
Eel slinger... that is a riot!
for me, on the rare moment that i can get out, I've been doing really well. Infact this is the best fishing for me for the whole season as far as a balance between quality fish and quantity...
no complaints here:D
ProfessorM 10-06-2004, 12:39 PM Fri. 1 30 lb. fish on Scorton Ledge. Mon. 2 fish high 20's same place and as many 24 inch schoolies as you want out front of Sandy Neck just look for the birds they are right on the beach in the middle of the day. I had the boat in 5 feet of water and fish on every cast. P.M.
beachwalker 10-06-2004, 12:54 PM bass are hitting squid and eels here. Still some Albies cruising around but the last storm probably did it for them.
I have had nothing over 25#'s but they are all from shore.
Last night was awesome :D :D
Mr. Sandman 10-06-2004, 01:28 PM Spotty from the beach, fish were stacked up 1.5 mi off the beach and would not come in....got in the boat and got them but fishing from the surf has been weak IMO. Yeah, a couple of nice fishhere and there but for the number of hooks in the water there should be a lot more then that!
I think the body of fish that were offshore are moving too. They were just sitting for days there but they appear to have moved now.
Franky, so far this is my worst surf fishing fall in my memory. Hope it picks up. Yes I am getting a few fish but they don't seem to be feeding hard.
I hate to see lobsters in their gut...wish we had big pogies around. The boat fish I have kept while all looking healthy and had large guts but when opened....were empty. Frankly I think they ate my eel because it annoyed them.
JohnR 10-06-2004, 03:28 PM Basic Patrick and I made one serious efforty on MV looking for bass and other than a quick flury of bass & blues at Gay Head there was nothing to report. Some people are getting bass from shore over there but it has been slow...
The boat guys were doing pretty good. Mr Sandman was lighting up the daily boards as were Masters Sandmen scoring in the juniors. Nice meeting you guys and good seeing you again Mr Sandman, wish we could have met up and fished.
Albies from shore are still thick on MV (utterly destroyed a Nautil - black :rollem: on 6-9# burners, bones were scarce, and blues tiny. But there were some spanish over there (though didn't get one).... Great timne over there, moving there when I hit Powerball :)
CANAL RAT 10-06-2004, 06:56 PM they banned pogie netting in long island sound and the adult pogies are coming back
I have to say, lately i've seen some pogies lately that are a step above peanuts... I dont know what the lifecycle is of menhaden but these were medium sized pogies.... I was happy to see them
my fall has been pretty good so far. been putting in a ton of time. not getting a lot of fish on every outing like last year, but gettting quality fish consistently for the past 2 weeks. released my best fish of the season last night, approximately 41", low to mid 20's or so. she was beauty and it was nice to see her swim away.
RIROCKHOUND 10-07-2004, 08:48 AM Eben,
those are the elusive Walnut Bunker; just a step above Peanuts :D
cheferson 10-07-2004, 04:30 PM Congrats bart!! WHat did you get her on?
Mr. Sandman 10-07-2004, 09:07 PM John,
What a week:rolleyes: My fishing dance card was prettying full and to top it off we had surprise visitors:af: (Anyone who knows me knows to leave me alone this time of year) Anyway You're right the surf scene is disappointing. Last night I found them in the surf but there was nothing larger then 20# most were much smaller. But at least there were lots of fish on the feed.
The big fish were 1.5 miles off the beach and would not come in. Not many anyway...when 15 guys fishing the tide walk away with one 35# fish that ain't that good. yet you take your boat out to the spot and 30#ers were stacked up thick...but now they are GONE too. I just came back with not much for my efforts. i am back in the hunting mode.
Sorry we didn't hook up. Before I knew it you were gone already.
I hope you had a good time anyway.
Roseneath 10-07-2004, 09:21 PM I've fished every evening this week (mostly Newport) and I
haven't had any action... its pretty discouraging:(
I'm gonna change my tactics and try early-morning.
...Right about now I'd settle for a few bluefish.:smash: :smash: :smash:
green meanie 10-07-2004, 09:50 PM i also seen some major blitzing of blues in RI on saturday.
lightning drove me to sleep in the car to the next outgoing tide.

Mrs. Bass Nut went out that way last weekend whilst I was not catching anything. "I saw alot of guys in leather. But not alot of bikes..." She has never been to that place before and I have never considered her naieve before that. "Sit down honey we need to talk.":laughs: :laughs: :laughs:
