Was down the backside this week for a few days doing some fishing and I happened to bring along my light conventional 9' lami with the Abu Big Game! It was the first time this season I have used it as I usually fish my spinning gear! Well.....I learned what a fool I have been all season for not using it more!:smash: I am still a relative newbie to fishing conventional gear.....I just started last season. You can't beat fishing plugs on a light conventional rod! My casting accuracy is much better (not that it was bad) I feel I have more control of a fish with the conventional rod and I also believe you can work a plug better with conventional gear.......does anyone agree or disagree with that?

I am going to start using conventional alot more! It is just alot more enjoyable than spinning!

i fish my conventional gear MUCH more than my spinning gear. i feel better connected to my plugs( if that makes any sense ) and i think i work them better. and then there's the added casting distance when needed and the pleasure of fighting fish on a revolving spool reel. :)

I'm learning the conventional thing as well, but it's frustrating at times to want to bring a spinner as a backup. Too much stuff to carry. I do love conventional for the big stuff though...

Me too Spence....I want to get a little more experienced so I can chuck eels with my larger conventional gear!:D

Practice, practice, practice I guess.;)

I usually throw eels with a conventional 1205 now. I do have some problems at time, I've got a 1213m which seems to be so much easier to cast.

The rod I am plugging with is a 108-1L Lami GSB....very light tip, great for popping or twitching plugs!:btu:

Spence....my eeling rod is a 1205 spinning rod! You like it as a conventional for eels?

1205 is great as a conventional. I've got a narrow spool Abu Big Game on it so the whole thing is pretty light.

I carry several in the boat and one ten footer on the beach, I just added a new Quantum Cabo CLW-20 to the ten foot JKFISHER and I luv it. The Cabo has ceramic drag washers and boy are they the cat's pj's!!! As I said before certain plugs just work better with a conventional such as Bernzy's Howdys and Pencil poppers. Big stuff like the largets Dannys and Habs big assed needles are better served, especially in the casting, by a conventional. I have been using the big JK with Tattoo's Darter and have much better feel and control with it and when a fish takes that plug I can control it better in a fast current. On all my conventionals I use Stealth braid from 30 to 50 pound, it casts real nice and holds up well. Try your conventional with eels, I think you will like it.:D
