View Full Version : Who Was Fishing The Derby?
BigFish 10-10-2004, 06:02 PM I have heard nothing about it except that the fishing over there may just be worse than the fishing on the Cape and Mass. in general!:smash: You folks who have fished over there in the Derby....how was it? Give us details!;)
Squid kids Dad 10-10-2004, 06:22 PM Albies,Albies, Albies...A few Blue fish...Very few Stripers...Word is there is still a lot of Stripers in Maine...Which means the migration is a couple of weeks behind..That might not be a bad thing locally..Great weather the past the ten days...Too good for fishing tho...Had a great time tho..Met some more board members and fished with same..Personal best Abie was 9:44...
BigFish 10-10-2004, 06:25 PM Good for you on the albie Mike!:btu: Thanks for the insight....lets hope you are right!
fishweewee 10-10-2004, 06:30 PM Fishing was a lot better than the Cape. Even with E/NE winds. :hihi:
Mr. Sandman 10-10-2004, 06:51 PM pmed ya
goosefish 10-10-2004, 07:13 PM I got some albacore and some monster chain pickerel.

if the same water?
goosefish 10-10-2004, 08:58 PM No but the pickerel pond is really close to the sea. I've been pickerel fishing on the Island since 1980 and the nice thing about the derby going on is the ponds are totally empty of anglers. Me and the new wife had us a good time sweet water fishing on a still water pond. Romantic me.
fishermom 10-10-2004, 09:23 PM I caught my first albie ever last weekend (and I thought bluefish were fun to catch). Had an awesome weekend with Bill and Julie and the gang. My first trip. Hopefully not the last.
Went to Nantucket this weekend. Not many fish at all ! Where are they all?? As of 5pm Saturday, the leading team in the anglers club bluefish tournament (beach only), 6 fish total for the 2 man team, was 16.5 pounds !! That's the total of 6 bluefish!!!!! I'm not liking what I'm seeing. Maybe they're just not here yet! Anyway, plenty of fall fishing left. We can only hope.......
BEETLE 10-11-2004, 03:26 AM Was over 19th to 28th.
Went back Wed. PM and stayed till yesterday AM.
First visit - lots of Albies, handful of small blues, but no luck finding big bass at night. BasicPatrick and I covered a lot of ground, but the bite was off.
Second visit - only 2-1/2 days to fish. I was a little slower paced, only one night raid with Fisherwoman and Basic, -0- Bass, -0- Albies, some rat blues. Good time even though the bite was off, could not get better weather through each of my stays.
BasicPatrick 10-11-2004, 09:02 AM Just got back from a three week stretch...
Boat fishing is excellent...plenty of all four species (Bass, Blues, Bonito, & False Albacore)...unfortunately save for a few trips I was shore fishing...
Shore fishing was mixed...may be the best year for False Albacore yet, but they are worse than bloofish in Derby terms...
Bass & Bloofishing from shore is horrible. I made all the right walks and fished all the right tides. Very few quality fish. One night I get em good (7 fish over 34", but nothing over 20 pounds)...I did get a nice 17+ pounder on the fly (holding second place)
Bonito are non existant from shore..only 14 weighed in during the four weeks from shore...
RI here I come
Mr. Sandman 10-11-2004, 03:12 PM You guys are not going to believe this...IT BUSTED WIDE OPEN LAST NIGHT...BIG BASS ALONG ALL THE SO. SHORE!!!!
:laughs:
Just kidding...little change from when you were here. I just had to bust your chops.:D I know you guys fished hard. The big name hotspots give up one big fish per night....no matter how many lines were in the water.
I have to agree with BP and others, the shore scene has been the worst since I lived here. And now the boat scene has dried up too. I will still fish it to the end. My hands are cut up to hell.
Anyway given the conditions a 17# shore bass on a fly is pretty sweet. BP is in good position...esp given the 40knot winds we are having which is putting the kabash on the fly guys.
I have had to go with the flow and fish the boat more then I would like...Yesterday I went off shore and put the kids onto 25 bluefish a few bones and albies. No choice. The squibby thing is over (al lest the fish that were there are gone IMO) I have been making the trip over to CH and the islands holes and have come up short most trips. Although I got my wife her first flyrod bass.
I will go tonight with the kids early and fish the lee and see if we can snake a daily bass after dusk. (when your 8 yo a 34" fish is nice)
BEETLE 10-11-2004, 04:54 PM Sandman - sorry I could not hook up with ya - just not enough time. I wanted to Albie fish with the gang in the AM and Basic and I fished about every night from shore.
Second time around I fuffiled some promises and was in a low key mode. Only did one 28 hour fish marathon. :smash:
Might be at the ceremony on Sunday, never been before and hear it's a good time. :D
Squid kids Dad 10-11-2004, 05:58 PM Sandman,Nice to meet ya on the beach at Wasque..Good luck for the rest of the derby...
Springtides 10-11-2004, 08:00 PM I was over for my first Derby on 9/24 for a few days with my two sons (18 & 21). One son has surf experience the other learned to cast a rod on west beach just up from Wasque. That in itself was a thrill for us. Our first Derby overall was a time we will always cherish and talk about. We fished all the spots and tides without much happening, though I must say the people on MV were great. I am going to try and spend some time back on the island between Thursday and Sunday if possible and if not the three of us and maybe an uncle or two will be back for the 60th. Nice thread bigfish!!!!
Mr. Sandman 10-12-2004, 08:44 AM SQD..Nice to meet you too and hope to see you again next year.
Beetle, I understand. I am sorry I could not hook up with you guys but stuff happens. Kids back in school with their activities, "surprise" relitives visiting (WTF were they thinking?) and oh yeah....work demands :af:
There is always next year. :D
There are some surf bass showing now. Got a few last night and my buddy weighed in a decent fish this am.
There was an afternoon blitz of sorts along east beach between the jetties and the light house. (small bass, blues albies ) It was a pain to fish it though..winds were gusting to 40 from the NNE.
weather looks bad for boating the rest of the derby...
I think next year sb.com should have a more formal derby get-together some eveing that includes dinner and fishing...it doesn't have to be a another contest just wetting a line will be enough for me.
BTW, I still have not weighed in a surf bass...my wife says I better get on the stick! (I have caught/released a bunch but not worthy of bringing to the scales) I'm hoping there will be a dramatic finish:D
vineyardblues 10-12-2004, 03:36 PM ton's of albies, also rat blues from day to day. a Few bass up to 15 lbs if you know where to go. The wind changed yesterday so I am sure the bigger fish are on the move.
The only good news is my friend is in front with a 42 lber . I hope it holds on until derby ends. :)
