View Full Version : Surf Cod Rig
Notaro 10-22-2004, 11:42 AM What's the most common rig beign used for surfcasting codfishing? Someone once told em that a fishfinder doesn't apply to surfcasting for cods. So I don't know what is a better rig for them. Can anyone gimme their imputs and some pictures? Thanks. I will use a abu 7500 BG C3 no levelwind loaded with 25 lbs solar x mono and 40 lbs big game supreme shock leader on 11'9 allstar rod.
Raider Ronnie 10-22-2004, 01:41 PM Joe,

a small one would be fine i think, but hell no, ron... :laughs: :laughs:
thanks, ben. but the best time for catching them from the shroe is at night? i dunno why people say that the best time to catch them at night is good. whats the connection between nighttime and codfishing?
BTW, i hope we could go on ave maria soon, sensi:D
Christian 10-22-2004, 07:59 PM high low rig is what i use.
i think seaworms work better than clams, although they dont hold onto the hook as long as clams do, and are harding to get the later you go into the season.
try to get your bait as far out as possible, and as deep as possible. i use around 4-6oz.
about 75% of my shore caught cod are caught at night. i get most of them in spring, but also get them in late fall.
you tend to get skunked a good percent of the time, but its fishing.
Notaro 10-22-2004, 08:42 PM Thank you, for the tips, but what about the hook size and style, christain?

Christian! Man, you tell it like an OLD beachrat. Exactly what we did 30+ years ago. Only shove the hook down the worm's throat. and more than one worm. That way they stay on longer.
thefishingfreak 10-22-2004, 09:39 PM try castle island pier. strait out it's about 50' at high tide.
or deer island rip, there's a 60' hole if you cast{far} towards castle island.

Iwannakeeper 10-23-2004, 05:41 PM Russ, I cannot agree with you more here.
Doen't seem like a productive sport. I have enought trouble trying to land a keepah striper from shore..... can imagine trying to get a cod from shore.

it's called fishing.;) one thing i dont like is having a stragety to land a big keeper in...
Rob Rockcrawler 10-23-2004, 08:34 PM I tried it last december from the salem area, man was it ever cold and we got the skunk. Didnt help that we couldnt find a open bait shop, you would think if there were cod around they would have loved the fresh cherriestones from stop and shop.
thefishingfreak 10-23-2004, 09:29 PM ya know there's holdovers in the rivers too.
keith 10-25-2004, 03:47 AM Most of the fishing i do here is for cod at night i can give you loads of ideas about baits and rigs that work here they might all so work over there
Notaro 10-25-2004, 10:06 AM alright, that's cool, keith. it would be nice to know those.
keith 10-25-2004, 10:48 AM Over here in the UK the following big baits big fish . Sea worms work well by them self or cocktailed with squid or clams to make a big bait. Fish baits can work again cocktailed is best, soft back crabs are a top bait . If you are fishing from sand its best to fish with about 6oz breakout lead this will hold you in the sand then with a good pull the the wires will release a 4/6 o hook should be fine fitted behind a impack sheild this will keep your bait intact till it hits the water. If your fishing over rough ground you might want to try a rotten bottom rig this wiil let you catch fish with out the lead becoming snaged up in the rocks or weed, you can all so use sliders which let you fish a long flowing trace that can be cliped up for casting but will un clip as soon as it hits the water.
If you want any diagrams i am sure i could send you some
fishweewee 10-25-2004, 11:01 AM Joseph, if you want I'll loan you my 14.5 foot Zziplex Dymic LT 14 if you wanna surfcast English-style. :hihi:

Notaro 10-31-2004, 07:10 PM okay, should my abu setup be spooled with braid or mono? im not sue if a bite detection is required for cod surfcasting.
maddog2020 11-01-2004, 06:57 AM FWW always makes it a point to mention that he likes MONO for baitfishing - I've read it enough times to remember that. ;)
People tell me and I've read of folks catching keeper size plus cod from shore, but I haven't experienced it. Then again I've never tried from shore. :) I've sea duck hunted many a COLD Jan & Feb so it can't be any worse than THAT! :P
Notaro 11-01-2004, 11:08 AM Good. Then I'm all set. I will be surfcasting for cod sooner as long as I finish my projects.
