Was in belsans the other morning and the topic turned to cause for the decline in the fish.

One point that was brought up was the outflow pipes.

Anyone have info on exactly what those pipes have been dumping into the bay and when?

How about any research into the effects that salinity has on fish?

It would be nice to see if there are correlations between those pipes and the populations of fish.

Is that where all the mung is coming from?

I had my best year in those waters the year the pipe opened. Me and Schoolie Monster had been fishing it regularly back then and the water "looked" different afterward (not a scientific study ??)...

Supposedly it pumps out the chlorinated effluent (since when is chlorine good for an eccosystem :smash: ? ) and I've also heard people complaining that the sand eel population has been declining since that started pumping...

We all know that when there are heavy rains the bait relocate from their usual haunts in saltmarshes and other estuaries.

If the fresh water pumped into the bays has a similar effect that would clearly cause the larger species to vamoose as their food source has taken off.

Any change in the food web has a ripple effect, causing changes to ever increasing populations.

Are there any real studies going on to show if there are connections between the outflows and fish populations?

Nothing fresh about that water from the pipe....

When I was in college, I wrote a research paper on the Boston Harbor tunnel outfall pipe and it really left me dismayed at what I learned.

It has been quite some time now since I wrote the paper and the details of it are difficult to recall now, but at the time I thought, "Good God, they're going to destroy one body of water to save another, and a marine sanctuary, no less."

It seems that given enough time, we humans will leave our mark on pretty much every square inch of this world, and not usually for the better I might add. :(

I wonder if the fisheries guys can talk about the outflow pipe impacts.

going back to a 1fish limit will help .isn't funny every season we have a thread about the bass declining the guys down in jersey had a banner year shore and boat with tons of adult bunker.i think why this year was off was beacause the water never got warm and water temp can throw alot of things off. we have had alot of rain these past 2 years that may be throwing off bait fish reproduction with tons of fresh water runing off in to small bays where baitfish reproduce maybe this year we will have normal spring rain fall and a normal dry winter

cutting a limit in half is not going to make more fish.

half of zero is still zero.

the problem is not one single item.
ignoring the other factors and concentrating on closing of f areas or limiting catches aint gonna do a damn if there are no fish in those closed off areas...

Are theose scientists out there fishing in the closed areas to see if there are any fish there and if their numbers are increasing?

I bet there are no fish there either and it aint cause they were caught.

yes it will it allows more bass to get to breader size i would like to see a slot limit put in to place allmost all other states have slot limits one bass under 20in one bass over 40in. strickly enforced regs on menhaden fishing would help the bait stocks that play a big part. make your views heard through going to hearings about stripers/menhaden in your area

I like the idea of slot limits.
I have seen what minimum sizes did to trout.
same thing is happening to stripers.

My strong beliefs on enviromental responsibility are the #1 reason I vote democrat. thats all i got to say about that :tooth:

i second eben i vote for whos going to protect the enviroment bush has weakend the cap on emissions from dirty power plants this causes acid rain and affects the chesapeak bay the stripers main spawing grounds bush has a "who cares" Attitude Toward enviromental Issues. but thats just my view your views may differ
