View Full Version : DZ in On The Water this month
Slipknot 10-27-2004, 11:54 AM Joe Lyons featured DZ in OTW this month and it is a very good read. I finally got to meet and fish with Dennis this past weekend over on Block Island and I can't think of a finer gentleman to fish with. He is full of knowledge from his years of experience. I can see why he is so well respected in the surfcasting community. :btu: Kudos to you Dennis :D
Excellant article Joe!
Mr. Sandman 10-27-2004, 01:21 PM have not seen OTW yet but ditto your other comments...
bassmaster 10-27-2004, 06:00 PM it was a good read
tynan19 10-27-2004, 06:23 PM I always enjoy reading about the history especially first hand accounts of the sport of Striper fishing. I want that much knowledge.
Patience young grasshopper it will come.
I learned a lot of stuff from him from just one outing...
He was an easy pick, Iron Mike described him as the best surfcaster on Aquidneck Island...but he was a real nice person to boot...
Here are some pictures from the photo shoot...

You're right, Slip - Dennis is well respected in these parts, he's truly what people mean when they use the term 'gentleman'.
I think D. realized a long time ago that your most important piece of fishing gear is between your ears - and he's certainly helped me sharpen my game along the way.
As far as the Yankees shirt goes.....well, ya gotta forgive your friends for their pecadillos, you know.
God knows, Dennis allows me my theory on the ghost school of deep-water bass that represents the third gene pool for our striped bass stock. I know he's gonna catch one of the scouts during one of his trips to the Island one day....:hihi: ...oh man, I can already hear him harumphing from here...
He's always been a friend and a supporter - and he's always worked hard on resource and access issues for all of us.
You know, I hope a publisher somewhere has the good sense to put his 'Snowstorm Blitz' into print sometime in the near future.
And if DZ ever does a lecture series on it, ya gotta catch it if you haven't already - it's impressive.
Flaptail 10-28-2004, 09:42 AM That did it! The Yankees! A pox on them and all that support them. Surfcasting is done with sand under your feet. That's rock hopping/NY Jetty jockey fishin' that is! Yankees style fishin'!! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:laughs: :laughs: :laughs:

macojoe 10-28-2004, 05:17 PM I guess i will have something to read when I get my new glasses Monday:smash: I am getting old!! :(
I agree with all of the above posts. It was a good article by Joe about a darn good fisherman and an even better guy.
Some things that Joe did not mention about Dennis that affect all of us. Dennis has been at the forefront of fighting for fisherman access on Aquidneck Island for many years. This involves a personal commitment of many hours of going to town meetings, speaking up to represent fishermens interests of parking and access and discussing these issues regularly with councilors.
When some of the local waterfront owners see fisherman trashing a spot, they don't call the city or the cops, they call Dennis. He comes out with trash bags, talks to the fisherman in a diplomatic way and helps them pick up the area. As president of the Newport Saltwater Fishing Club, he also organizes and participates in shoreline cleanups, runs fishing clinics for kids and on it goes.
He is also on the Rhode Island striped bass advisory committee, and always sets an example for all of us to help make our sport better.
PS. Joe you could cut up that shirt for an eel rag like I was going to do last month on the Cape but he's got about four more just like it.
Ed
Thanks to everyone for the kind words. Joe Lyons did a nice job with the story. As far as my shirt goes - oh well - congrats to the sox. You know its not easy being a yankee fan when your two children and your wife are sox fans. Its been great around the house since the sox won the series - my family is sooo happy. I could never enjoy the playoffs in past years because my wife hates the yankees and takes it out on me when they win. I'm so glad the sox won and the curse is over. So if the sox screw up from now on its because they have a bad team, can't blame it on the Babe anymore.
Now that the series is over I can get back to my rocks. Tight lines everyone - don't quit yet.
Regards,
DZ
