Anything homemade , cookies ,fudge, cakes. and im sure he,ll be sharing some with his buds. It,s really the thought behind it. i,ll be doing the same when my son goes off to the mid east in a couple of weeks. :(

I'd ask about the homemade stuff...it probably doesn't ship well and could be in transit for a while...

When I was in one of the guys I was stationed w/ would send those Hickory farms gifts sets, the ones w/ the Summer Sausage and the Cheese, and throw in a dozen or so nips. Man just taking an hour or so to sit around and have snack and a drink absolutely rocked.

I don't know if US sausage and chese will compete with what's available in Germany (it's otherworldly over there  ). Maybe you can send some authentic Rhody "weiner" sauce that seems to be so popular locally to put on some german wurst. Or maybe some real local sauces that remind of home. But some things that you can in no way get over there - copies of favorite TV shows on DVD video - Swapping movies and shows is very big over there because AFN TV can't play everything. Movies are big and shows Like the Sopranos. Also BIG is football games and maybe the Sox run to the world series... That 3 Games to Glory video on the Pat's Superbowl might be big if he was over there then...

The biggest thing is finding what is rare and expensive over there but readily available here.

Smokes, even if he doesn't smoke, American cigarettes were great for bartering when I was overseas (france and italy).

I had a buddy in Afganistan and sent him a nice little package. We're always busting each other's ball$ so I stole some of my mother's romance novels and sent them over with an episode of Dallas (the tv show) on VHS tape.

He still hasn't forgiven me for that yet. But what are friends for?

I have to think it raised morale quite a bit.

A lot of people come in my liquor store to buy nips for their friends or family. Then the wrap them in toilet paper or something. American magazines, Maxim, FHM, PBoy.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm defnitely sending him the pics I took of his fish. 52.3 lbs caught on father's day (sunday) he was deployed that following Thursday. Magazines great idea and didnt even think about the tv shows etc thanks guys that should help out. Just didnt want to send sand to the beach, or something like that. Oh btw when he landed that 50 it was his first time ever fishing saltwater, the group (6) landed 3 50+ fish and random 40's. I know where I'll be next father's day. :D
