schematics (http://www.scottsbt.com/acb_sbt/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&Product_ID=933&CATID=52) click on schematics and drawings{under the reel picture}

it's a pain.
it's under the cup.
everythings gotta come off and i mean everything.the side plate, the main gear, the spool shaft,,everything..........

pain in the arse to get back together, not impossible, but tricky.

get the tools out, and alot of workspace, it's gonna be a project.:D

#4a{silent dog} and #10{ratchet} is what controlls it.
take it appart and see what happened.
the dog needs a little springy pressure on it to engage. might just need to grease the ratchet and squeeze the dogs arms a little to tighten them up.

Chef there are 2 dogs on that reel, one for the click/no click and one for the anti reverse.Follow the silver bar connected to the ant /rev switch to the black plastic end (its round with a little knob on it. The dog you want is lying on top of that. There will be 2 silver tabs coming off the brass dog gear ,they go on either side of the ratchet gear( round ,brass with a lot of teeth over the pinion gear in the center). Sometimes these tabs separate a little and don't grab the ratchet enough to pull the dog into it so it will stop the reverse action. If this is the case try squeezing them together so they will grab the ratchet gear.---this is the quick /lucky fix. If the dog or ratchet is chewed up, you need to replace them. Give it a look and if you get stuck, see me in the am. some day, and I make fix:D

Thanks Joe, Ive tried the last 2 days to stop by and see you , but then i find some nice fish:smash: . I was on my way yesterday, halfway there till i spotted a sick blitz accross the bay and had to fly back at 90mph!

Its a very common problem with all the bigger PennSS reels. Replace the dog as mentioned and buy a spare or two while you are at it. It will happen again a couple of years from now or sooner depending on use.

My God I hated that, kept spares in the glove and reels to boot
both in truck and in boat when had the tank.
my 550 use to die all the time.

Just squeeze the thing ptJudeJoe is talking about. Worked wonders for me and never had the problem again. Easy.

You probably want parts 4, 4A, 6D, and you should always replace 10 when you replace 4 and/or 4A ( I learned the hard way).

The parts are cheaper than 3 tangles on a trip or missing a trip toatlly so get a few............

The anti reverse crapping out on a Penn SS is a law of nature. They even go so far as teaching it in Physics classes. I have one, and won't ever think of fishing it again as I've probably fixed the antireverse about 10 times. Always craps out when you're into the fish too.

squeese it together only for it to work alittle longer.
i fished those reels so hard that the slop in them was horrid and had a huge pile of penn reel parts for putting them together
I would wear that dog right off .

I could biotch for an hour after dealing with this all day. Then to top it off, tossed the top half my rod in the suds!:af: I hope its still there when the tide goes out.
