I made a bunch of pluggage last winter with hardwood dowels from the local hardwood store...no splits as of yet. I know these weren't pine...The density varies so watch that.

They might sell pine or fir rods in the millwork section.

I think I read that Home Depots dowels are a hardwood from South America. ( species unknown to me). If you just want to mess around they should be fine. If you are going to fish them just be sure to seal them.

gaaaabage dowels FF, they're made of Ramin which is a south pacific AIR dried timber.....no kilns, has grain like Oak, tough to paint cuz it has air in the pores...u need wood maybe you should come down....I got some nice birch and maple, cedars etc....I'll even cut it up to what you want....and ya can get the other thing at the same time....

They seem to have poplar, oak and that weird ramin stuff where I live. The grain is pretty inconsistent. I pick thru an entire stock to get a few lengths that I'm happy with. I use mostly the poplar. AC Moore has some stuff that you can pick thru. Look for the good tight grain.

Quality Dowels will work FINE, A Dowel was Square before it was Round ,It will save you a Little time if you don't have the tools....................

FF is going to make GRAIN tomorrow on a lathe with some real tools :)

Good dowels are hard to find now-adays the one's to stay away from are the darker one's that look kinda like oak..those are the air dried one's and the moisture content is way up there and they are hard to keep paint on because they have open cells that spit air out.

Downs and Reader has decent hardwood stuff as do some of the other distributors.
