confused.. i thought i had a big roughing gouge.. turned out to be a big spindle gouge.. i used a nice henry taylor at the pen turn athon.. but what do you recommend.. will be getting a lot of useage..

sorby, p&n , taylor. crown.. marples, etc.

I've got/use an old 1" craftman's......can make shavin's or I can make it cut so fine there's no need to sand.

One inch!!

1" is plenty. The others are huge. Way too big for turning plugs.

all i have is a 3/4 craftsman with a cracked handle.. guess i'll pick up a 1" and then get a new handle for the 3/4..

i bought a set off ebay from tool america. 3/4 works great for me. i was unsure because they were so cheap, but i am very happy with them. the whole set was short mhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=42282&item=4336631392&rd=1oney.

a good beginners set is at Home Cheapo. Like 30 bux for a set of 5 tools. Decent tools but just not comfortable to use.

i use a sorby 3/4" works beautifully.

i have a 1 1/2 inch for roughing out squarestock blanks.. it works awesome. Once its round, I step down to a 1 inch or a 3/4 inch depending on what I am doing. But then agian i havent made a plug since last winter:smash:

Crash, you have a lathe, make the handle.

i'll defintely make the handle. i am going to grab a chunk of wood at woodcraft tommorrow am.. and make a handle..

either ash or maple... i was there the other day they had some nice chunks of 2x2 stock.. i'll make a nice one..

ldoing my early research before turning my first plug I read a lot about makiing custom handles.

Wouldnt it be something to see a pikie or danny handle on your 1inch skew?

good idea.. pikie with the curve of the head being the thumbhold..

Crash, if you are going to be in the Lakeville or Norfolk area in the near future, I have lots of ash. Be happy to share some.

i go by there frequently.. we will have tohook up

i have some craftsman chisels.. but none have an edge to cut melted butter.. but they soon will..

i was turning with a spindlemaster.. nice tool ..it is good for coves and curves.. but not for long straight edges.. will have to sharpen up the 1" skew..

i did grab 1-1/4 crown rougher on sale at woodcraft.. i am still going to make a pikie handle for my 5/8 spindle gouge.. just to say i did..

will post that when its ready for paint..

How do people SHARPEN these things!! I am new to this, inherited a buncha stuff from my dad. His tools definitely need sharpening and don't want to screw them up more.

still working on that part.. if you have a woodcraft close by the offer sharpening classes for woodturners..

or you can get a wolverine sharpening jig by oneway.. thats nearly a complete system that works with your bench grinder..

i have been trying to build my own version from plans in books and on the net.. some builders here use slipstones and or fine sand paper on pieces of wood..

found out how poorly a dull chisel cuts the other day..

Get a video or, even better, find someone to show you how. I would be happy to if you are in my area. You will need a bench grinder with a fine grit wheel.

Mansfield MA not far away. Just started haven't turned a plug body yet. I have a Shopsmith MK IV in my workshop from my dad.
