View Full Version : So, you think you know needles?
Mr. Sandman 11-19-2004, 11:43 AM Who made these classics?
I am giving these to DZ for his needle collection...we were talking and he seemed excited to know I had a few left. They were in one of my backup storage tubs that I have not opened in a long time.
So .... who made these plugs? I will give you a hint if you want.
BigFish 11-19-2004, 12:50 PM My guess is Arnold Spofford!;)
RIJIMMY 11-19-2004, 12:54 PM Are those boone, or boon, something like that? Just a guess
Slipknot 11-19-2004, 01:07 PM they look really old

Almost as old as Flap:laughs:
Mike P 11-19-2004, 02:08 PM I actually have the green one on top, but I'll be damned if I can remember who made it
It's not a Boone or a Spofford.
tlapinski 11-19-2004, 02:13 PM very similar to the original gibbs. maybe a pichney?
Mr. Sandman 11-19-2004, 03:57 PM You guys are making me feel old.
You probably have never heard of him. But if you look thru your old "NE fisherman" mags (80-82) and Tim Colemans old striper books he makes mention of him (TC fished with him a lot at BI)
Hints
They were made in 1980 or 81
last hint...
a "quiet" guy from SE CT area
tlapinski 11-19-2004, 04:09 PM this is buggin me now. i have read Coleman's books a bunch of times, but don't remember the builder though. got any more? my needlefish collection is missing one those no matter who they are! ;)

i have some gags needles wood ones in the pacjkage.i have hahn needles also.My friend turned them in the seventy's on a giant metal lathe.some would just get the flame treatment very deadly.
Flaptail 11-25-2004, 06:36 AM Gags is going to surprise us all again this spring with the re-issue of some old wooden lures, They are long and thin and stripers love them. Bliz it looks like he changed his mind!:D
Karl F 11-25-2004, 09:33 AM Flap, got a couple for you.. Cape needle lore... ever here of the "Need-Eel", or the Nauset Needle? both circa 60's...The first one I think actually was sold, the other was homemade, and copied by those that could... I've been pickin some of the old-timers brains on needles, they remember versions of them in the 50's, used with success especially near the "old" Chatham inlet.
Mr. Sandman 11-25-2004, 12:31 PM who made these?

Karl I got some old cape needles here:D
Chris in Mass 12-08-2004, 07:37 PM Found this one in the wash this year? The eyes appear to be glass or some type of sequin (pin hole in the middle). On the nose, paint was green on top and red on the bottom. Can you tell if this is a custom or factory producecd? Just curious.
Oops - Is that a MurEel in the background
tynan19 12-08-2004, 09:31 PM So for those plugs would 44.00 be worth it. The winning bid was high.

I am going to say yes because VB knows his stuff.........
either that or they were something that was missing in his enormous collection.......
tlapinski 12-09-2004, 08:24 AM $20 a piece for those? easily worth it if you don't have any in your collection like me. friggin' VB..... :smash:
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:42 AM Karl you got me on those. Are you sure it wasn't called the "needle-eel" I remember hearing something about those but could be what you mentioned. I remember showing that little red head six inch needle to a couple guys I knew one night at the Old Bass Run tackle shop. One was a guy who had a Jeep Grand Wagoneer ( what we referred to as a Cape Cod Cadillac as anybody who was well heeled in those days on Cape drove one) who used to fish Nauset with his son alot. He was a native and he hung out at Tony C's shop when he first opened it. The guy hung a lot of nice fish off Bass Run's outside rack. I remember him mentioning a "needle-eel" when I showed him the plug.

Just wondering because of the discussion from before about the price of vintage plugs.

Flaptail 12-09-2004, 12:12 PM VB, I remember when you could walk into Red Top and they had litterally buckets of Sandee's for sale in the old tackle specials bins. Nice stuff. That leather thing is way cool. Never saw one before.:D
Thanks Vineyardblues - some really neat stuff. Thought Norris made the first needle on the Cape maybe not. Sent you a pm for some additional info.
Tattoo 12-09-2004, 06:48 PM VB,

Tattoo 12-09-2004, 06:49 PM From Murat's Tackle shop when they went out of business.
Tattoo 12-09-2004, 06:50 PM Looks like a Hans, but with three belly weights. Anyone know who made this?
vineyardblues 12-09-2004, 08:09 PM yes that is a Roman,

VB
Biteme 12-09-2004, 08:14 PM VB, did they make those smaller Romans in plastic? I have the same one in wood and several in plastic.

ThrowingTimber 12-10-2004, 06:51 PM Anyone know who made this trumpet fish?
ThrowingTimber 12-10-2004, 06:52 PM close up of the belly
steelhead 12-11-2004, 10:00 AM ???
Biteme 12-11-2004, 11:14 AM :laughs:
Mr. Sandman 12-11-2004, 11:33 AM Don't laugh to hard at the bic needle...I bet it would out fish a lot of lures.
Pete F. 12-11-2004, 04:59 PM How would you put a center hook on it? I can think of a spot where a clear one would be a killer.
capesams 12-11-2004, 05:09 PM Steelhead.......leave the head on the pen....just behind where the head meets the body put a black eye on[marker] then drill two holes close to the center,,,one for the belly hook and the other for a drop of lead...drill through the lead so your wire will pass through that lead and keep it in place,,no need to poxy the lead hole;)
steelhead 12-11-2004, 06:10 PM Hey CS, I was wondering about the belly hook as I was putting it together. Thanks for the how to and where :-) This one started out with the point, but it broke as I was wrapping the wirter at the rear. Next one. Going to have sneak a few more from the wife's pocket book.
Should the lead go behind the belly hook so it rides a bit nose up?
capesams 12-11-2004, 07:16 PM :D
steelhead 12-11-2004, 07:50 PM Found an old clear one. Not one of those new cheap ones....
Maybe I'll color it with transparent magic marker.
