here's a jig that will do both needle's and swimmer's..for drilling hook holes and the lead hole dead center down the middle.

the sst lip on the left side will hold any swimmer and the screw eye just above that does needles.

the plywood cross bar on the right side has a u shape slot to accept the tail end of the plug and slides back an forth for any leight plug.

I just picked up a 1/4 sheet of brich ply. Going out to the garage to whip one up. good idea combining the 2 onto 1 jig. Thanks for the pic.

I made several like that.my buddy used to have em for every type plug he made used to make em outof any little pice of wood he had layin around.I recently made one for the eyesholes with a old drill bit I would stick into the front hook hole.from the side made several holes in hieght for differnt thicknesses in the plugs.

Capesams & MAC, one question: what is the purpose of the eye screw that is just above the metal lip? I can see how the metal lip holds the plug steady when drilling, but I can't figure out the eye screw.

Do you guys drill the eyes on needles before or after the belly holes? I've been doing them before, drilling a small hole all the way through...then stick a pin through the hold which rests on the jig to keep the belly pointing up. How do ya do it with this jig?

I made a jig for this tonight and it was wayyy easier. Granted, you have to leave the square stock nubs on the end of the plug, but all it is, is a board with a strip of wood on one side. Clamp it to the drillpress and all of your holes will be inline. Just slide the plug down the strip of wood. This will work for big plugs, small plugs, fancy plugs, and in my case, ugly plugs :D

Make all ur blanks the same size put a stop in front an just flip it around to do the front an back holes.a stop on the ban saw works the same way for the lip cuts.Depth an height.I do it like that keepin the ends on i drill the hook holes eyesholes an lead hole.then i cut the lip slot.I don't make 20 at a time.more like 2 or 3 then i get bored an wanna make something else but a quick jig keeps things nice.A neat jig for the lathe just clamp a plastic profile piece to the tool rest an a small c clamp on my pointy thing.not elaborate but gets the job done.for a stop on the tailweight holes I use a scrap piece of the blank up on the drill bit.i used to do everything by eye.I would mark the center holes with a 3/4" piece of lath lay it on the 1 1/2 stock on the edge an it will be pretty close to center i would adjust right or left if i had to.I make alot of quick jigs at work u be suprised what u can do with a set of clamps.

I put together a couple of jigs for the drill press based on the one capesam posted, and one forma while back about using dowel centers to hold the plug for thru drilling. The jigs work great, what a time saver.

With this one setup I can drill all of my holes Weights, hooks, eyes and even the thru holes on short plugs. I've got to finish long thru holes by hand (its only a 10" press) , but I'm working on a jig for that too, Maybe tomorrow. :)

Ok, on the table of the bench press is the jig like capesam showed. I need to find a thin piece of stainless to hold the swimmers in place of the thin copper thats on there, but for now thats good enough.

On the base of the drill press I mounted a piece of wood that has a dowel center that I use for thru drilling. On my press you can turn the table so its clear out of the way...

I've also done a few things with the jig base don capesams specifically to fit my drill.

In the bottom of the jig there is another dowel center that I can use for thru drilling short plugs.

One end of the jig has a 1/8 wide screw, and the block on the other end which fits tight, has a 1/8 in nail. I am thru drilling with a 1/8 bit so they fit snug.

I raised the level of the nail and the screw so they are 1/8 in taller than the sides. I did this so that I can put a 1/4 dowel in the belly hook hole, and rotate the dowel so it lays on either side of the jig. This rotates the plug 90 degrees for the eye holes...

Then you just push the dowel to the other side to drill teh other eye...

I'm going to build a jig for the hand drill tonight similar to what you showed me... :)

I can drop by after work any day next week (mon-wed), if any of those days works ok let me know...

I was so pleased with the way the jig turned out. I have a fence that is attached via slots in the drill press table. When I push it all the way back it is 2 1/8 from dead center. So I made my jig 4 1/4 wide, so all I have to do to line up the jig is push the fence back as far as it goes and I should be centered. To make sure its centered I put in a 1/4 bit and with the drill off I can lower the drill and if it goes into the hole for the dowel center, I know I am centered. :btu:

The jig is reversable in that I can flip it around to the other side and its still centered. That way I can always hold the jig w/ the left hand and lower the drill with the right...

That dowel trick is a great idea. CS- I will be copying your jig tonight. Thanks for posting pics.
